Approaching 100,000km i'd like to give my transmission a service.
I was quoted $360.00 from my local Auto Transmission Specialist in Central Queensland (N.B. everythings generally more expensive in these parts). The quote is for a full oil flush and service. Apparently the flush will use up 16 litres of transmission fluid. I'd like to know if a DF/NF/EF V8 auto has any adjustments; or is it an all electronic transmission, meaning you remove and replace the filter, change the oil and bolt it all back together? Also, can anyone tell me how to flush a transmission. Are there any special tools needed? Cheers... |

yes a flush does take a few ltrs of fluid and it isnt very cheap stuff.
also very ezy to do on ya own. just drop the pan/sump of the box, change filter, put new seal on and whack it back on then fill bacl up. in not sure how to flush it properly. probly just repeat droppin the pan a few times with a bit of engine running in between em.

Yeah, thats what i suspected. But equally i'd like to know for certain how they flush all the oil out of the torque converter, which is why i asked about special tools?
Any one else know how they do it at the Tranny Shop? |

Two more questions for those of you out there in the know.
Question # 1. Which transmission cooler line is the return line on a 1995 V8 LTD/Fairlaine/Falcon? Question # 2. The owners manual lists the initial fill specification as CASTROL TQ-95 as well as a number of others as viable alternatives. Are there any transmission experts out there that can tell me which one is best and why? |

Whatever you do, use a synthetic fluid when you do the flush. It's more expensive but it will make your trans last much longer.
I've done this in my Pursuit and will do so in our ED 5.0L also. |

Just posting back on the outcome....
I've successfully serviced and flushed my own transmission. I bought a transmission service kit and 16L of TQ95 transmission oil (N.B. this is the specified transmission oil specially formulated for Ford 4 Speed Auto's). The dropping of the transmission oil pan is easy, so too the changing of the filter. I then refilled the transmission with four litres of tranny oil beofre i disconnected the ransmission cooler line from the radiator. I them disconnected the hose from this piece of tube before refitting it to the transmission coller/radiator up side down so that the tube was now pointing up to the sky. From there i attached a two meter long 10mm lenngth of clear tubing so that i could see the quality of the oil being pumped out. The tube was run into a large plastic storage container, which i did just in case the oil came out too fast and too much for change over and its just as well i did. Upon starting the car i continued to empty three more 4L bottles of transmission oil into the filler tube with the engine running. The oil came out thick and fast and it took almost exactly 16L before she started to pump out bright red tranny oil. At this point i quickly shut off the engine and reconnected the cooling lines as they were meant to be, before restarting and checking the transmission oil level. I had to add another litre to fill it to the correct level. Now i have a serviced transmission fully flushed with 100% new oil in it. |

Was your car running in a gear or just in park?

Neutral actually, with the park brake relased and on four (4) car stands as i'd replaced rotors and pads as well. the wheels were spinning but i don't think it would matter if the tranmission was in park, neutral or in gear as the fluid wpuld be pumping to cool the transmission regardless.
