Those Cons for the underdrives aren't actually true.
The only time I've seen a charge problem was when the owner didn't fit the overdriven alternator pulley and even then that was one guy...others who didn't(including me) never had any problems.
The waterpump actually turns too fast normally and underdrives actually reduce the chances of cavitation.
And no-one that I know that's fitted them has ever noticed any difference with steering effort.

How can a smaller pulley reduce pump speed

The main crank pulley is smaller by a fair bit, A smaller pulley will reduce the belt speed as the circumference is smaller.

Example, you have a pulley that is 10 inches in diameter which has a circumference of 31.4 inches

Your motor is idling at 500 rpm, so so in one minute the belt will move 15700 inches.

If you swicth to a pulley that is say 5 inches it will give you a circumference of 15.7 inches
At 500pm, one minutes worth of idling, the belt will move only 7850 inches.

Now that pretty much slows the belt speed down to 1/2 speed .

Now N/A (permanent Lag) - AFR 165's, Comp XE270 cam, 1.6 RR - 269 rwhp 14.1 @ 102mph.

The same way a small cog does on your bicycle.
