I have done a 4.0, never done an 8. Can anybody give me a rough idea whats involved? I remember hearing talk of adjusting them, so I'm guessing there is more involved than on a 4.0.
Thanks fellas. |

Manifold off, undo the spyder, swap them out. Re install removed bits. Its pretty easy, but i didnt know they could be adjusted.

The adjustment may have been on the older V8s or with some aftermarket bits. I have no clue. TWhats a spyder though? Got any pics? The 5.0 engine bay looks like a jungle compared to a 4.0.
Going to give it a crack with a mate and will get a manual, just wanted to see what I could find out. Thanks for the help. |

Thanks for the help. spiders a simple finger plate that holds down the roller lifters in the valley,2 bolts hold it down, same in v6 holdens.the lifters are self adjusting-hydraulic.

So we can chuck them in dry,and they will pump up,adjust and bleed themselves?

If you want to be thorough then the pre-load on each lifter should be checked. Spec is between 0.75 and 1.75 turns of the hold-down bolt from initial lifter plunger travel to when the fulcrum seats on the mounting pedistal. Checking is done when the cam is on base circle. Pushrods should also be swapped end for end.
But why change them? They typically run for a half million k's (plus) before they need a change.

Everyone just said they are the self adjusting type. Changing them because they are noisy. Why else?

Here's the spider. It's the spring steel bit. Yours won't have the bar or studs, just bolts.

If you are going to all the trouble of fitting lifters, you may as well throw a cam and timing chain in there while your at it. Not much more work to do it all, and it will last a lot longer if everything is new.

I have no clue on V8's or Pushrods, so I don't even know where to start. Like what to undo! Should be a learning experience. I appreciate you taking the time to throw a pic up. |

{USERNAME} wrote: Everyone just said they are the self adjusting type. Changing them because they are noisy. Why else? They are self adjusting so long as the lifter pre-load is within the range I gave you. If they are below the range then the cause of the noise could actually be pushrod(s) that are too short. This is often encountered when a re-profiled cam has been fitted. Have you tried new oil? Old oil or incorrect viscosity oil can make good lifters sound noisey by increasing the bleed-down rate. Lifters aren't a common cause of problems in these engines in my experience.

295K. Seems healthy. Slightly rough at certain revs, I'm thinking Harmonic Balancer though.
Its a bit of a project, we were going to shut the tappets up and go from there, checking timing etc. |
