ok i blew a head gasket( well ive got a crack and it is slowly getting worse)
im thinking the best way to fix this would be to get a new engine. I drive an EL with a stage 2 transmission. ATM their is only a v6 cylinder in it and i am thinking of upgrading to the 8 if i have 2 get a new engine is this recommended( the time/money)...how much would this cost to install the engine and all the random s**t (to get it running to normal standards) would my transmisson have to be changed? how much would it cost in total and where would i get this done in SA... i would be looking at an EL or EF XR8 Engine...is this recommended?? |

Just flog off your car and buy a car with a V8 in it. BTW, your EL as a straight six, not a V6.

I agree if you want a v8 in a e-series buy one with it already in it. Its been covered a few times on here and it's not worth the hassle. I'd say your best bet is to either get your head gasket done, look at reco motors or buy a V8 Falcon. |

Heck what am I saying.
Get yourself a cheep torque wrench and a cheep tooklit and a 14mill Impact Wrench socket (for the head bolts) and change the head your self. You will Basically need the following tools. 13 Mill Socket for the Radiator Fans and the Exhaust Manifold and the Rocker Cover and a 10 Mill for the Intake Manifold and I think Its a 10 For the Cam Shaft and a 14 For the Cam Shaft Drive Pully. Its way to easy not to do. |

In EL its a basic change, with only top plates for the mounts that need changing. Crossmember, rubber insulator part of mount all same as six.
Wiring harness from ECU is needed, as well as engine harness. Front bay harness, as well as all other harnesses are carry over between 6/8 You will need V8 motor/box/shaft, throttle cable, as well as ECU. Cooling systems are same, diffs etc. Not alot in it really, can be done in a weekend easilly. I would suggest finding a wrecked Fairlane/LTD as a donor, makes life easy. |

A head Change will cost you betwen 800 to 1500 bucks. It's not what you start with. It's what you finish with.

It's what you finish with. ef/l 6's are 157kw xr6's are 164kw ef v8's are 165kw el1 v8's are 170kw and s2 are 185kw. therefore the difference between an EL 8 and 6 can be as much as 28kw. to the original post - if you do end up getting a donor car to do the swap, try to chase down an au v8. these have gt40p heads and explorer manifold which are a lot better than the e7's and ho on the e series 8's. i'll hazard a guess that your skills may not be up to the task though considering you don't know the difference between a v6 and straight 6.

A head Change will cost you betwen 800 to 1500 bucks. 8 kw dude. 157 vs 165 All 5.0l motors from the EF and ELs are the same aren't they. If you can source the motor, box and well everything under the bonnet for cheap, it isn't such a bad choice. |

I dont know much about the 5L's and always notice their low outputs. Can these things be made fast with reasonable money spent on them? or is it a better option modding an I6. Also, how can these compete against the boss when modded.

302 windsors have loads of potential.
if you wanna stick n/a the 5.0 will kill a 6. have a look at whats available in the states and you'll see just how far you can go. main issue is alloy heads cost a mint, and a simple cam change aint quite a 'simple' job.

What John said.
The Windsor 5L's have an enormous power upgrade potential and you can push a N/A V8 motor ridiculously far depending on the money you throw at it as the market for Windsor parts is gigantic. By comparison the potential of an N/A I6 engine is minimal when you throw money at it unless you choose forced induction. It's always about money.

back to the money eh, I wouldn't mind getting a 5L as a second car in the future, they sound good and i'm fed up with trying to mod s**t on the BA, it costs too much cause you have to get people to do everything cause its all closed up and over computerised. Are their many differences between the ford and holden v8's apart from the fact the holdens are faster (so i've been told)
Edit: s**t, i just realised your back on Vic. I'm glad your better after your stack mate.
