Now that I've made cam choise and I'm aware of P/V clearance issues, what is the best method to check?

I've been told dummy up the engine....

Use model clay on valves...

Start the engine....

Can anyone give me any more specifics and what I should and shouldn't do.

Cheers

What I did was clay the top of the pistons, just around the valve reliefs and put a bit of oil on the valves so they dont stick to the clay. Install the heads (on old gaskets preferably so you don't wreck a set of new ones), install the rockers etc then turn the engine over by hand a few times. Take the heads off and then use a sharp blade to cut through the clay through the thinnest point and measure the thickness.

Thanks guys, sounds like a pretty easy process.

If the piston doesnt go all the way through the clay, then what would be the thinnest bit of clay that you would take it that it wont hit, considering they might expand in hotter temps. Maybe half a millimeter to a millimeter?

Just had a thought, is it wise to check all pistons or is one or two sufficient?
