hey guys,
got a set of AU V8 valve covers, but can't decide whether to polish them or chrome them. They are the beige XR8 ones with the name tag. I'm thinking chroming will be easier, but chrome might look old school. what do you think? |

Aren't they stamped steel? if so there is no point in polishing them unless you are getting them chromed - bare steel will rust real quick! so I think you have to choose chrome or paint!

They are polished ally although I didn't actually want then polished. The only other choice was black wrinkle finish but I didn't want that either so I just got the polished ones and I'll let em go off. I'll get em on the mill and lose the "racing" and "boss" logo's too so it'll just say Ford.

thanks for the link.
i notice that you painted the intake manifold. I am going to paint mine as well. Any recommendations? I thought powder coating would probably best for a long term finish.

That's just overspray from the block on the intake. It's getting ally heads and the intake will be ported and will be left bare ally when reassembled. I've done clear powder coating to the lower in the past(which looks really good) but unfortunately it doesn't last because the ally really needs an etch for it to work correctly so it ends up yellowing and/or getting corrosion creep under the coating. There is an etch available now but it's a gold colour so of course clear powder coating is pointless.
Bare ally is also best for heat dissipation. |

Its a good time to buy ally heads...AFRs are under $2k delivered from the US which is pretty good relative to past times.

Yeah it's good time to buy alright...I've blown about 2k in the last six months. I just bought a set of Ford racing Y303 heads back off a mate who never used them. $1400 with roller rockers. Not as good as AFR's but they're more for weight reduction than anything else, and they do have very good low to mid lift numbers which is what I need for stump pulling torque. This 351 is going in a '93 Range rover.

I sort of wanted to keep factory look with a bit of bling. also was going to the nametag back on. The after market ones you have to be careful of the breather cap - left or right side. you're right about the stamed steel - might go the chroming cheers |
