My recently aquired AU XR8 has a Cobra HO intake fitted to it, and what looks like an 80mm throttle body. The previous owner said it was from a mustang.
Can anyone shed some light on this rather kicka** looking mod ? I've tried google, but cant seem to find out any info on it.

The manifold seems to be the standard Explorer/AU manifold fitted with the Ford Racing Products dress up piece. There is very little difference between the AU/Explorer manifold and the Cobra intake so I doubt anyone would have spent $1k on the same manifold. The easy way to tell if it is a Cobra manifold is to look at the Number 1 port on the lower - if it has the ACT sensor hole drilled and tapped (and in your case plugged off as the AU has that sensor on the intake tube). The maximum throttle body size for this manifold is normally 70mm due to the intake on the manifold but someone may have match portrd it to the bigger throttle body. You need to take the intake pipe off and measure the throttle body on the inside - the smallest diametre is the actual throttle body size.

This is my cobra intake {DESCRIPTION}, as you will notice it looks quite a bit different compared with the explorer which yours is, plus the cobra has the EGR built in, not a spacer like the stock, explorer and GT40 manifolds. The cobra plate thing on the manifold is just a cover plate that you can buy in the US, you can get cobra, ford or mustang from memory. As MrLandau said, the throttle bodies are usually a max of 70mm bacause that is the size of the manifold opening, but it looks like it is the standard AU 65mm unit (although it is hard to see in the pic.

It's an AU series one XR8 isn't it?!
From what I can make out of the engine picture, the 185kw (orange injectors) engine with a supercharger. You do have a "standard" AU inlet, EGR plate, and 65mm t/b, so I have to agree with the guys above.

Thanks for the help guys.
If it is a 65mm throttle body, do you think I would gain much upgrading to a 70 or 75mm one ? Roughly how much can you pick up the larger ones for ?

70mm TB's go for around $500 plus you will need a larger EGR spacer too which will be another $150. Being supercharged there would probably be a slight improvement going 70mm but probably not worth the cost.

Cobra HO is a paradox. It is either a Cobra intake or it is a HO intake...two different things. If it's an AU it's likely the stock Explorer style intake which is nearly identical to the '93 Cobra intake. The HO intake was used on all std 5.0's from EB-early AU.
If it's an 80mm t-body it's way to big for an otherwise std engine. 65-70mm will give the best performance... any larger will reduce performance greatly. Cheers, Pete. |

The charger hanging off the passenger side gives it away a little but. Not sure how much boost is running but.

All I know is the plate on top says "COBRA HO"
As far as running gear goes, It's running a Vortech V-2 supercharger @8psi, large intercooler, lumpy cam, Pacemaker headers, Motec M48 computer, custom built twin 3" Mandrel bent exhaust with twin cats, larger injectors, and according to one of the receipts - some sort of head work. It was last tuned and tested by Bob Romano and puts out 363 RWHP, but I think the guy I'm having tune it this week may be able to squeeze a bit more out of this set-up. He built my friends Escort race car engine, which at the time was the most powerful NA 4cyl in Australia. So I'm hoping for a good result.

It's also running a stock diff.
Based on what has been done to the motor so far, can anyone suggest a diff ratio to improve performance ? I'm going to ask my mechanic on thursday, but any suggestions would be welcome. Also, I was thinking of installing a Herrod s**t kit later on, has anyone had experience with these ? The car revs hard and fast so I figure the quicker I can change gears the better. Again, any suggestions would be welcome. Thanx guys.

well to improve accel the next step up from the 3.45 is a set of 3.9 gears!
this will increase your accel quite easy but will hurt the fuel on the freeway... but since u have the 5spd it may not be too bad.... sounds like a nice setup u got going there pity the v2 cant squeaze more boost

I would suggest pulling the motor apart and seeing EXACTLY what is in it. Its obvious the previous owner has told a few tall tales about it.
The stock manifold and stock injectors might indicate, that all he did was put a blower on it, and not ungrade anything else in the engine. You are most likely gonna break stuff very soon!! (something I know only too well about) If its a stock T5 - I will not handle the power very well - look for something a bit stronger soon. If you are gonna stay with a 5 speed, I wouldnt go over 3.7's in the diff. Oh, and get the valve springs checked. I dont have anywhere near the power that your car has, but didnt stop the aftermarket stregthened valvesprings from snapping (and the collets being sucked into the valves)... but then again, I do drive it pretty hard.

Hey Disco Frank, the v2 supercharger is good for 16psi, but of course not without some serious upgrades elsewhere. Hmmm, maybe in a few years...
Hey XR8Chic, The owner wasnt telling tall tales, I have nearly $40k worth of receipts sitiing in my glovebox for the aftermarket parts, engine work and suspension work, this guy spent a small fortune getting everything done right, he just ran out of money near the end, and his wife quit her job, forcing him to sell it, which is why I got the car for only $22k. But I reckon I can finish the job off for no more than $5k total, which would include dyno tuning and remapping the computer, tidying up the engine bay and replacing a few worn bits, and some big fat brakes and rotors. then a full car detailing.
