I've never replaced the coolant on a car with a header tank.

Is the procedure any different?

Just dump the coolant, flush thru a few times with the hose, replace the thermo as its fuked, tighten everything back up then refill from the header tank?

Do the windsors have a problem with air staying in the system?

It will tell you in your manual what to do exactly, there is a procedure i forget off the top of my head, but your basically right altho you have to leave the car running n put the heater on for x amount of time n s**t, flick thru ur manual or grab a service book, in there too.

Thats pretty much right, run the motor with 50/50 coolant water mix, drive for about 20-30k's at varying speeds with the heater on full and the fan on high. This stimulates the system to "burp" itself, or you can do the same proceedure but not drive by letting it idle for about 40-50mins. This is my experience when doing a change. This way the low coolant light doesn't keep coming on

Yeap - Brett and Daniel got it all there. The system has an auto air bleed built into it but probably easier to get the air out yourself.

To the dump, replace what you need to replace, hook the hoses back up... fill from header tank up to the correct level... let it idle for a bit with the cap off and heater on and you will see when it burps. Kill the motor immediately and you will see the level in the header tank fall. Fill up to the correct level.

Repeat. Then just keep an eye on it for a day or two.

What hoses do you pull off and where do you put the garden hose to force the flush?
I've never done a coolant flush or dump before. Its for a V8?

g'day cobber.

dumping is a pain in the a*** (ha ha) if you'rs is the same as my fairlane you've got to pull the plastic shield off from under the front of the engine and pop a hose off down there which makes it nearly impossible to catch more than 80% of the coolant. your clothes and hair will catch the other 20% though.

to flush mine i took the end off the hose and pushed it as far down the header tank hose as I could and turned the hose up high as. seemed to keep enough water going through.

if I had a tig welder i'd me welding a bung in that metal cross over pipe for drainage.

In my ED there is a bung in bottom RH side of radiator - I think same for EL. There is a hole under the front metal skirt where u can fit 13mm socket undo and water comes out. Dont over tighten.

Replaced the thermostat and coolant today. Rather simple.
The 13mm plastic bolt (plug) at the bottom of the radiator made it really easy. Took off the header tank and tried to clean it out. Not very successful. Got about half of the crap out of it.
I was a bit reluctant to do the sand in the tank and swirl it around for fear of not getting all the sand out, that would be bad.
The thermostat was a bit hard to get out of the housing. Destroyed it to get it out. Then cleaned up the surfaces of the housing and whacked in the new thermostat.
The temp needle sits just below the "L" or just on it. Rather happy with that. The thermostat I pulled out had 192F and the one I put in had 180F on it.
It sits just out of the startup rich loop.
I didnt flush the system because I didnt want to put tap water in the system so I just drained it and in the end filled it.
All is good.

now you've dropped the thermostat temp you can prob advance the timing a degree or to for some free power

not sure on your car mines a bit older on mine you have to initiate an engine running self test in the ecu and use a timing light but that's on an eecIV ecu you should probebly start another thread in the ecu forum or here asking how far anyone else has advanced the timing and how to do it on the newer engine.

I still havn't done mine yet but I intend to time it for 96 octaine at the colder coolant temp. that way i should get the most out of the primium.

Nah, that's it. Enable the diagnostic mode and wait for the revs to pick up and hold... at this point the timing is locked... timing light, the indicator is on the driver's side of the harmonic balancer... loosen dizzy and "just like the good old days"

Just dont play with timing unless its in the diagnostic mode... EEC will know...
