G'day, anyone fitted 2040 (Pn.444231) crane cam in a AUIII windsor?
motor stock, except for 1.72 r.r. paceys, K&N , cold air, match ported intake manifold & exhaust. is this cam too much for stock gt40ps? should i stick with 2031(Pn.444225) crane cam? can i get away with stock EEC? car is 2002 5spd man ute. any info would be good.

crane 2040 needs 1.6 roller rockers.
i would get the 2031 so u dont have to change rr's. this cam should work ok on ur AU. the 2020 on my EL didnt go well so had to get a unichip. u might wana get a flash tuner since they're out for AU's now. |

The 2040 is the same as the Ford motorsport E303 cam. It will produce decent results, but IMO the 2031 is a far better choice for your combo. Both should run ok with the stock EEC although the 2031 is more computer friendly.

Can anyone explain to me why 1.72 r.r will only suit certain cam grinds? probably a dumb question but wanna know.

You can use 1.72's but the cam was designed with the standard 1.6 ratio in mind. Probably the main thing with the 2040/E303 is that it has 0deg overlap @ 50th with 1.6's but with 1.7's it will have a few degrees of overlap, this results in a slight loss in cylinder pressures which, although having both positive and negative aspects, its probably not ideal for a general street engine IMO (although the effect will probably not be all that much in reality).

Cheers for info EDXR8. Going with the 2031, outlaw speed shop have one for $336, sounds like a good price? Will also be replacing vavle springs, any recomendations? Should i replace lifters, ute done 100k and not noisey(lifters that is)

$336 is a good price. I run crow cams 7728 springs along with 11700-XR8 retainers, they are decent quality and are suitable for cams up to 550th lift. crane cams also do a spring/retainer package for the 2031 cam, plenty of people run them too.
As for the lifters, they generally don't need replacing as they are roller. You should inspect them for any abnormal wear/damage, and if you want you can dismantle and clean them out which will bring them back to as good as new. |

I dont like the Crane cams spring/retainer package (p/n 44308-1) they recommend for the 2030/2031 cams.
I have broken two springs in the last 3 months. First time was OK, just replaced the broken spring, but the second time I ended up with a bent exhaust valve. And thats with a rev limiter at only 5500rpm... I am getting the heads rebuilt at the moment and plan on using Isky springs. |

Exactly what I did. Isky 6005 double springs and cost about $200 I think I recall. and good for 550lift also. And apparently an very very reputable brand |

Don't heads need to be machined for Isky springs though?

Isky products are the ducks nuts, never heard a bad thing about them in the 18 years i've been playing with cars... used their springs numerous times.
Thier cams are excellent aswell. |

Every head builder I have spoken to so far has rated Isky as one of the best.
Springs are 200, retainers are 90, and locks are 70. Yes, the heads need to be machined for (all?) double valvesprings. I think I need the 6105 rather than the 6005 (diff spring rate). I need some adive on this.. |
