Hi guys, I own a 93 V8 LTD. Lately the car has been behaving erraticly. The idle is all over the place 500-1200 rpm. When accelarating off, the bastard car hesitate till it's on the verge of stalling, in a AUTO!! Pathetic. If lucky I'll take off, hence i have to use the pedal like it's broken glass! Also when giving it a good rev there's black smoke shooting out the exhaust and it smells a little bit like fuel!! Could it be over fueling somehow? I don't know what could be wrong, I've change the MAF to brand new unit to no avail. please help otherwise I will throw a 6 in and call it a day and cry how crap exhaust noise will be. Thanks

Changed fuel filter recently? Plug leads, cap/ rotor, plugs...?
Check that the little vac hose to the fuel regulator right behind the throttle body isn't cracked or disconnected. Manifold vacuum leaks? Check that the donut-shaped attachment on the rubber intake tube (or tube itself) isn't cracked or leaking around the hose clamps. Check that the idle speed controller plug is clean and tight. MAF is plugged in, right? Hope that helps, Mike

I've changed the leads recently after it started playing up. Funny you mentioned donut shaped thingy. Gave it a rev today nearly stall on back off, then a pop noise and that donut thing was blown right off the tube!! WTF? And what is it for anyways? i hate the looks of it as it is. can i get rid of it? I'm gonna go and check all those thingd you've suggested. thanks

Piss the donut off! Get a welsh plug and hose clamp to fit and cap it off. Have removed mine and it idles fine.
Another thing to check/replace would be your o2 sensors. Also, fit a K&N panel filter to improve air flow. Is it LPG/Duel fuel or ULP? Cheers, Mick

With the overfuelling it sounds like o2 sensors to me. Is there anyone near you with a diagnosics scanner. That may help you identify your problem.

O2 sensor hey? sounds very logical, the car is a straight petrol waster. It just convert petrol into noise!! Can I check to see if O2's OK by using a multimeter to check the voltage or anything. Or should I just lash out and buy a new one and cross my fingers. If so how much would that cost new? I'm getting so sick of this car. V8 sucks a**. They sound great, slow as buggery my EA on dual fuel has been hassle free motoring for the last 4 years. Is it because it's just a piece of Yank crap? If the problems doesn't get fixed soon it looks like matches and gasoline will be a fix!! I'm at the end of my patient level.

Spend a little bit of money to get them breathing and they go just fine!
Ummm, it's possible to use a multimeter to check it, but I'm not too sure exactly how. It would be a pretty expensive exercise if you went about buying new o2s and it didn't turn out to be the problem. Go into your local mechanic and see if they can do a diagnostics test for you. It should cost bugger all and that will tell you if the sensors are faulty or not.

02 sensers should realy be changed around 100,000 klrs..
They are like spark pugs.. As they get old they tend to read less which would make engine run rich..

I was looking to see what sort of voltage I was getting out of the O2 sensors. Guess what? I can't even get at it!! I hate taking it to the mechanic. They drive it like they stole it. Anyways I'll take it down to this Keith Linnell place in Cheltenham rd and I'll see how that goes.

The 02 sensors have to be tested with analogue multi ..
A digital meter averages voltage..

Righto the Idle has been fixed!! Yes it was the O2 sensors. All up costed me $120 for an ebay sensor. The sensor was covered with black soot and just wasn't looking pretty. Also the wiring has corroded away. Drives great again!! Thanks for everything guys much appreciated..
