So i've got a bit of a question relating to the other side of the automotive fence :lol:

I'm thinking (only preliminary at the moment, nothing concrete) at buying a cruiser with my brother. it has a mild 350 chev in it with a T400 3 speed auto.

if we were to buy it, we want to put a 4 speed gearbox in it, to make it more economical as a highway car.

so my question is, what sort of 4 speed gearboxes go behind chev motors? i'd put an AOD in behind a clevo or windsor, but not sure of the chev equivalent.

stick with the t400 and change the diff gears instead.
it will be cheaper. and the t400 is far stronger then the t700 you'll end up using.
You'd also need a new auto the transfer case adapter $$$$$$


also get the carby and ignition properly sorted.

thats proly not a bad way of looking at it.

anyway, all i could find that seemed comparable was the 4L80E, but i'm not sure if they do a non electronic version of it.

oh well, i'm going for a more thorough test drive of said project car next week to see how it goes.

what size tires will be on it? alot of guys are finding with 35+ inch tires that the overdrive in the 4 speed boxes is to tall and end up fitting shorter diff gears.

When you go and drive it find out what diff gears it has and then calculate out the final drive with the tire size you want to run. then compare that back to the final drive of the stock setup.
Also keep in mind that a cruiser is a big heavy brick, labouring the engine on the highway will hurt economy.

:lol: so i've just become aware of the error of my oiginal post. :oops: when i said cruiser, i meant as in a relaxed, comfortable car. not a land cruiser. the other (more obvious now i think of it) meaning didnt even occur to me, sorry about that.

the car i'm looking at is an old chevy sedan, so still a big brick on the highway. :lol:

i will just wait and scope it all next week when i'm back in town.

ahh. my bad. :oops:

i still think a diff gear change would be cheaper. more so if it has a ford 9 inch under the back.
also Carby Center / Performance Parts Plus has recently got the NQLD distributorship for I.C.E. drop in and see them about 6amp setup for it. and fit 670 Street Avenger on a Performer or performer airgap if it doesn't already have one. that should solve any economy issues.
