How about the 8.7 Dart block ??
Btw Dart blocks don't have screw in walsh plugs.. Ok, So what would you recommend I do? Like block, head and manifold wise? Im after round 450hp at wheels.
Cause depending on how far I have to go, depends on weather I do it to my EL Ghia, Or sell the Ghia and buy a series 2 au xr8 and do it to that............

With a blown engine thats easiy ... Imo go the strongest rotating assemby you can. Either block will do but I stayed away from 347 and used 330 / 3.25 - 4340 crank .. I have Twisted wedge heads but any afterarket head will make power when air is forced in there..In my case I'm using turbo's. I have them set up so rpm runs out around 6500 so there not much chance of over rev etc.. Plus ecu rev limit setting... This my engine..

Ok, well definatly keeping fairmont.
So the quest of mods starts now! Block - Dart or World? And what deck height should I get? Stroker kit - What size? Cause I was thinking 347 but have been told they have problems? Heads - Either trickflow cnc ported R heads 225cfm or a set of afr heads? Cam - unsure depending on weather I use boost or go n/a. Inlet manifold - trickflow box R manifold with 90mm throttle body. Nos kit - direct port 150hp - already have this! Now, What would people recommend and why? Im aiming for 400+ hp with out the gas. This could be achieved n/a if I went the bigger block and got 400 cubes but thinking engine would be sitting way to high..... Other option is boost, And id supercharge it if I go this way, A vortech T-Trim or something alike.

Depends on $$$$ but it nice to have same brand induction all the way through...
If you are usure what you want to do either N/A or blown ? Then fit a cam with wide base circle of atleast 112 so it works o/k on both.. Compression is going to determin which way to go? 8.5 to 9.20 is o/k with forced induction....If you us AFR heads make sure you upgrade there std springs and have well notched pistons.. TFS have upgraded all there heads and have CNC heads as well recently... I'd like to see / hear a good engine with R series boxed inlet...Especially with forced induction.... 600 / 700 rwhp easy....

If I built my engine again I'd use 25cc piston or 8.5 compression so it gives me more power with little or no boost [ though it does give me the chance to make more power at higher boost / flow levels in excess of 20 Lb].. With modern good ecu's these days heaps more compression can be run, especially with good breathing induction, heaps of swirl... Get pistons with same dish opposite head shape, gives better quench ...

Trickflow make forged pistons to suit there twisted wedge heads, Are they any good?
Just out of curiosity, how much hp do you reckon the 347 n/a would make as opposed to the blown 347? Say I went 10.5 comp and a big roller cam?

Depends on how you want drivability a blown engine can be as smooth as std and still make 600 h.p but an N/A engine will be bucking nd kicking like a wild Bronco and its power wil be at peak rpm... Where forced induction you could drive from relatively quick and ot go over 2500 rpm built right...I spent big time makin an extra 50 rwkw @ a time, then I fitted turbo's a doubled power and torque with stuff all boost. Depending on your efficiancy range of comprssor [I guess centrifical are similar to turbo housings?] Better flowing heads breath well with higher lift cams. Restrictive heads nead overlap to make the same power...But as said less tractible...400 h.p on a tractable n/a engine, 650 h.p [conservative] on forced induction..
Forced induction doesn't require expensive valve train as rpm can be lower if built that way as rpm an be set at 6200 with its wide power band...The power / torque you have in higher gears compared to n/a cars .. I can cruse through hilly roads in 4th and top gears while n/a you'd require 2 nd and 3 rd gears....

Of course if you go with big inches you can have tractabilty and make a lot of power without forced induction. Those aftermarket blocks can go 460 odd ci no problems.

This is what im unsure of...... The 3351 block can make some serious cubes and power, but it seems it will be to big, i.e sit to high and will end up going through my bonnet....

Sorry to hijack the thread but how did you get the rpm to run out at 6500. Did you just pick some heads that were suited up to 6500rpm on a standard stroke engine, and any higher then that and their flow just drops off? |
