Hey there,

I have been looking into buying a dart block for my Xe 351c build.
I'm interested on what people think of these, Are they worth the extra dosh? Or Is one best to just stick to a stock block.
I'm asking in regards to building a 500hp-600hp 351 Cleveland.

I assume you realise the Dart block is built with windsor architecture and are looking at building a clevor. I would go with the 9.5" deck block instead as it allows a heap more stroke. But at the power level you indicate, a factory 351 W or C block will be OK if built and tuned properly. The Dart block would be a worthwhile upgrade if money wasn't an issue.

I wouldn't bother spending the $$ on a dart for the clevo. They are pretty strong anyway. later model 5.0 windsors on the hand........

For higher HP just ensure build is good - balanced and good components.

They are all getting old now If I was spending good $$$ I would go
Dart for sure.. Ooops I already have...
By the time you machine etc a std Clevo block your near the price of a Dart..
Yep go the 351W deck with Clevo mains..
If you definitely want to keep N/A engine go with 4.125 bore and decent stroker
crank...427 cube small block...

Ive been offered a virgin 351c block, 90% complete, for 1000nzd, will need a rebuild, which is pretty gud.
Are dart blocks really worth the extra 3000+ by the time i get it here? (new zealand)

im hoping for about 500hp in my street xe.
Keeping in mind i am certainly not rich! Lol altho i dnt want to cut big corners.

A 2 bolt cleveland block will be fine with 500hp. Just make sure it hasn't got too much core shift.

yeah what xr9ute said.. and apparently the older series block the better, as time went on they were making them lighter and lighter untill we've ended up with these tissue paper blocks.

I have also found this, and the later blocks also ran corrosion inhibitor. So the bores weren't getting attacked from both sides

kind of depends on how you want to look at it you see..
the 5litre roller blocks 86 onwards can handle about 300 rwkw (400rwhp) before they want to start grenading, just ask the short track guys in the U.S that have to run regular production blocks.
The weakness is in the webbing, its a very thin casting making them particularly light for a cast iron V8, they were cast thicker in the early days so the older a Windsor block the better they are for power production.. they are good for around 530 horses/7000rpm.. with a mains cap girdle :P

1974 and earlier 351 Windsor blocks are capable of over 650 horses but pushing them beyond that and screaming them beyond 7000rpm needs a 4 bolt mains conversion.
The 1975 and later blocks are cast thinner around the webbing and roughly 4.5 kilo's lighter but you'll still screw 550 horses out of them but cant accept 4 bolt mains so you still gonna have to go for the mains cap girdle wisely.
anything over 30 thou on a cleveland bore and you'd be pretty nervous trying to apply any power out of it.
Of course we all know the guys that have squeezed more out of them, but i'd be getting pretty jittery after 600 horses.

Pity you are in NZ, i have a stroker and matching dart windsor for sale. Was purchased to build a 427, but changed plans mid build and went for a later model (94 roller) 351W.

Freight would be a killer is all.

The std Clevo and 351 are good to 600 h.p easy..
Latter model Clevo's had better foundry tech..
Most Clevo's in U.S made in Michigan have sleeved bores..
Latter 5.0 Windsors got lighter and weaker..
