its getting the correct valve opening and closing times to suit the power band you wish to have. just basically, moving the cam round degree after degree, without adjusting piston movement or ignition timing to get things opening and closing to suit your needs

Am i correct in thinking this is only able to be done with an adjustable timing gear on the cam. This is the case with the 6's but unsure if the windsors are the same?

if u get a new timing chain they often have keyways set so u can spin the crank cog around a bit and it will offset the way the chain sits on, giving you a few degrees of advance or retardation depending on the keyway.

You can change when the power comes on, so if you retard the cam timing, the power comes on later, and if you advance the cam timing, the power comes on earlier. Only 4 dgs either way makes a fair difference.

no idea on how much movement gives you how much power.
the principle is the same 6 cylinder or 8. ford holden toyota anything with a cam, in theory, can have the cam timing changed with an adjustable cam gear |
