is there much difference in the engine bay? just weighing up the price difference seeing as both would get new exhaust and headers and CAI and simple things like better water and oil pumps. thanks

The only thing i've heard is that the oil pumps on the 3V motor (The XT one) is that they are a lot stronger and better than the Boss motors.
Apart from that, as Pete said above, there's no difference in price, or shouldn't be. |

Are you asking is the engine bay different, or are the engines different?
If its the engines, there is a lot of difference between them. |

asking performance wise, and i yeh i worded the question wrong, difference between the engines, due the fact i could buy a XT 8 and supercharge it for the same price of a XR8
thanks guys |

The XR8 and FPV 8's get a quad cam 4 valve per cylinder V8 the 'BOSS' motor. These are made in Oz from imported blocks. Oz made rotating assembly, heads and intake are added.
The others when optioned with an 8, get a single overhead cam, 3 valve per cylinder V8. This is a US imported 'crate' engine. Both a 5.4L (330ci), blocks are almost the same, heads are very different, intake systems very different. Unsure about the exhaust headers, all the headers I've looked at say they're for 4 valves only.

3V heaps of down low torque, Boss good power up high but nothing down low. 3V with cai, exhaust, tune, lsd and cams would be the go If you want to look into a charger, have a chat to Chris at Bluepower and he'll tell you all you need to know

There have been a couple of people mod these 3V engines and even an article in a mag some time ago. they reckon they are grossly underrated as far as potential goes and respond very well to modification. I just spoke to one on the phone and he says that with CAI and exhaust and a good tune he has had a 3V engine to 330hp at the wheels and says you would have at least 310 at the wheels from any of them done properly (equal to or more than a std GT at the wheels). He also said that they are very comparable to the 260 engine and while they might be a couple of KW behind they have better low down torque. they are currently perfecting a powerdyne kit for these engines.
Hope this helps. |

I know the 3valve is a bit quicker off the line to the xr8 too, I think ausman can attest to that. he works for a fraud stealer somewhere on here hehe.

paulhowes, they are very underrated! Everyone thought i was stupid buying a 3v ute and should have got a xr8, but they have all changed their mind after seeing it now. With a good cai, exhaust and tune they are beasts on the road, the main problem i have now is getting traction in 1st and 2nd And it wont be helped once the tune is finished and when i put cams in it
I think 330hp is a lil over the top, while it is achievable i wouldnt want my car at its limits cos it wouldnt be lasting very long, 310hp is a good figure for one of these. And just a comparison with the xr8 and 3v, I was driving Craigs xr8 ute from Aussie Car Enhancements (12.14 qtr mile in race trim) and while it had great top end power i found its lack of low down torque (didn't have 4.10 diff in it) quite dissapointing on the street, it may be better on the strip but on the road i'd pick a trusty 3v anyday |

I also own a 3valve XT and have been thinking about doing these mods for a long time however before i can there is a rough running issue with a surging idle issue that i have that Ford do not have a clue about, has anyone come accross this issue before? can anyone help?
