This idea has been kicking about at the back of my head for a month or so now. Im thinking of building a sports sedan from my EL parts hack that has been clogging my driveway. What I am after are some suggestions for the Motor, Box and Diff, what type, what configuration etc. Its a long term thing, and it will be done not so much on the cheap, but by myself more or less. I was thinking Cleveland motor, either 302 or 351, and starting out with a big a*** carb, leading to injection later. I havent chosen a gearbox yet, but will be aiming low in terms of power and torque, about 400hp and 450-500 torques... Am also looking for a few heads ups on parts ie cambered diff etc.
Thanks for any help offered. |

Sports sedan's our generally out of reach for the average punter.
I'd look at the Improved production category. research the categories before you work out what to put in the car.

Thats why I want to go down the S sedans route, as essentially driveline options are open, more or less. The nearest race track to me is about 900k's, so Im not exactly rushing to build something. I have been involved in Imp Prod and HQ's previously and am aware of the costs involved. Im looking at this as a 12 - 24 month project, perhaps longer. At the moment I am sourcing prices and catalogues for various parts and suppliers, deciding on a budget and organising a place to build the car (moving house to one with a big shed). Im not intending to sink a s**t of money into an engine and gearbox just yet. The intent is to get a v8 and a box that will fill the hole in the engine bay. The effort will be in designing and building a tubular chassis, similar to how the V8 supercar boys go about it, but obviously not as extensive in the amount of barwork. Was previously thinking of doing a car for the road, like an xb coupe or a hot XE, but the thought of f**k about with engineers certificates and rego and insuring it put me off. Id rather just buy something nice for the road. However a track car, It has to be safe, comply to the relevant rules which apply to the category, and after that, chuck it on the trailer and have some fun. Im not going out to put Michael Schumacher to shame, however, I am aiming for a low, light car, with about 700hp at the end of it, that will lap Hidden Valley at about the 1.17 mark, maybe a bit quicker. If that takes 5 years, cool. Im looking for some suggestions and general advice from people who know more about engines and gearboxs etc than I do. The other thing Im trying to find is someone who either has moulds or a V8 supercar kit to suit an EL.

You could go straight for a Ford racing Coyote engine. Lightweight, powerful, heaps of potential and cheap!

Yeah was just looking at the ford racing US site, theres some lovely goodies on there. The designation of engine groups are little iffy though, 302, 351, modular and big block...where does the coyote fall under that tree???

Think of the coyote as a modular. It's like a big bore 4.6. So short deck like a 4.6, same bellhousing pattern, smaller DOHC heads than a 4.6 or 5.4. and stronger aluminium block.

I take it they ship from the US, I like the 'this engine qualifies for 14.99 shipment', I bet they change their mind on that when they see where its being sent. $6200 US with the oz $ at parity is nice though.

You'll also need...
M-6017-A504V street rod controls package and maybe... M-8600-M50ALT alternator kit I suspect these engines will come down close to 5k before long. |

Just in the planning at the moment. Will do a build thread if I decide to do it. Will be fun.
