Why the balance pipe ?????????????

Ive got twin 3" pipes (cats/hotdog/mufflers too) and they are only really good for the 'higher' rev range - not good for economical daily driving. Most exhaust places will tell you that anyway brad. Spot on guys. If you aren't doing too much to the motor then 2.5 inch would be plenty whereas 3 inch robs low end power unless you are doing a lot more to your motor. That I learnt when researching exhaust for my car from more than one outfit. I chose Pacemakers going into a single 2.5 inch because theres only some tentative plans for roller rockers, 65mm TB and inlet manifold work - on the horizon at the moment which would easily be within the exhaust's perfomance envelope.

brett351, balance pipes usually mean a nicer note and a bit more power
as for size, i would go for twin 2.25, maybe with 2.5" after the diff

there arent really any cons of running a balance pipe

Dont balance pipes create an equal pressure on either side of the motor, so one side doesnt restrict gases more than the other? (especially if the pipes arent both identical length). mine is before the cats.

The only 'con' of a balance pipe, or X-pipe, is the extra cost. They sound better, get rid of droning, and can improve torque if designed properly

mines basically a straight piece of stainless pipe welded in just before my cats - its also the closest point on my whole exhaust. I guess if you had a large length of balance pipe you would create some unwanted turbulance which could retard your performance.
The bloke that set up the exhaust on my car used to own the car and runs a performance and exhaust centre in perth too. |

D & T performance in Adelaide did mine. New pacemaker headers and hiflow cats. I couldn't have a twin system, like I wanted, because my car is too low. If you are losing the fuel tank you might be right.
Will get a 3" single rear end installed in the new year. Have a look at their webpage. http://www.dtperformance.com.au/xr8.htm

Some V8 lovers prefer the sound of no balance pipe.
I would go for a X pipe, but there is a bit more cost to this design. Brad you might have some clearance problems with the watts linkage with dual if it is to come out each side, it has been done but it is normally a tight fit with nasty bends.

do EPA/ADR permit me to end the exhaust anywhere besides the rear of the car?

IIRC it has to be 4-6" behind any body vent or opening window for the passenger compartment.... if ya wanna dump at the diff or behind the rear wheels, iy should be ok

Weld the rear doors, bolt the wndows shut, and exit just past the front doors. Solution But pretty much anywhere behind the diff should be fine. It has to be behind the last passenger vent like said before, including doors. Not sure how dual pipes coming out of the side of the bumper just behind the tyres would look
