i am currently on the lookout for a xr8 and thought i'd just ask a few questions on here. i want it to sound like a v8. i noticed on a eb i looked at it had twin cats. is there any advantage in running twin cats. obviously two 2" cats will flow more than 1 hi flow cat but is it worth the extra cost. i also presume a 2.5" is big enough for a stock 5.0. i am not planning on opening the motor up. looking at minor mods eg. exhaust, intake, maybe diff and manual conversion if i can't find a manual one.
any other things i should look out for. i'm new at v8's. 28 years old and never owned a v8. very sad. can't believe i'm even telling people

All the e series 8's have twin 2 1/4'' exhaust from exhaust manifold back. i would keep the twin system and deffinetly put some pacemaker extractors on. maybe get a single 2.5'' exhaust from the y pipe back.
or u could run a twin 2 1/4'' system dumped after the diff.
no need for high flow cats as you're gonna keep it stock and they cost around $200 each!
that'll get it sounding like a windsor 8 should!

as for diff gears, maybe go 3.7 or 3.9's. cost around $1000 installed.

other bolt on mods u could do are 65mm throttle body off an AU 8, bigger MAF, underdrive pully set, cold air intake.

would love to but budget doesn't stretch that far. recently bought a ba futura wagon for the missus so just after a toy for myself for a work car. prolly use the wagon most on w/ends. my xr wagon has over 290000 and drives like it has 90000. km's don't really bother me. can generally tell how a car has been looked after if i take it for a spin and have a look. couple of nice ghia v8's i'm looking at too as much more fruit on the inside. au f/ghia 5l on drive.com.au with 87000km for only 8500. did au non xr's have 185kw?

ah, fair enough. normal au 8's had 185 i think? explorer inlet manifold, gt40p heads, 65mm throttle body and bigger MAF. that'd be my best bet, to get and AU 8 so u got a better base to build on. engine wise. how much are stock AU 8's goin for? dont think there'd be many for sale with a manual box?

The stock non XR AU such as the Fairlane have 175 kw.
As for 224 k's, thats not much at all, especially for todays engines and the way they're geared.
An AU Ghia 5.0 with 87,000 for $8500? It's either a misprint or sold the second he adv it... i say jump on it.
I just picked up an AU Fairlane 5.0, very clean with 217 on the clock for $10k, looked at one before that for $12k and was a total pig.
Avg price was around $15k.

I seen 1 AU Ghia 5.0 with LPG, sunroof and 108 on the clock for $12,500.

Keep looking mate, the AU 5.0 is far more responsive in stock form than any stock EB to EL 5.0 i have driven... they all felt like slugs to me.

If you want an E-Series V8, at least budget for a bigger maf, explorer manifold, and an exhaust and extractors.
Or just get an AU or ELII XR8.
Or budget more money and get a Sprint, EBGT, ELGT or FBT :P
The 165kw 8's are breathless as f**k.

yeah that AU seemed very cheap. unfortunately i don't have the funds to move. my laser sold tonight but only got $3300 for it. now waiting on the wagon to sell. i like the look of the eb/d falcons though esp. when dumped with nice rims.

what i'm after is that unmistakeable v8 sound so exhaust straight up and i want it to go as good as my current ride so a few other mods needed as i've ran e series xr8's with not too much trouble. had a drag with a au3 xr8(220) and pretty much stayed on its rear bumper. at the moment sound is prolly the number 1 then i'll go as the funds allow from there.

You ain't kidding!

When i seen my Fairlane advertised i thought no way it's gotta be a total pig for that price.
It was almost 2 hours away so i had a mate who lives down there to have a quick gig, he called me back and said if i don't buy it he will sell his AU XR6 and grab it himself.
When a bargain comes along, don't waste 5 mins, jump in and grab it.
