Hi, my cousin and I have an EBII XR8 that we are turning into a track car, we have finished with suspension, weight reduction and everything else not engine/transmition related. We are trying to get the best bang for buck on the engine and transtion/diff etc.. Our budget is about $2000. but
we will do more on the engine next year after we save up some more dosh.. what should we do with the initial $2000? Thanks.. Dan

does it have an exhaust and decent extractors already?
if not i'd like to revoke my previous suggestion and do that if it does have those already, get the AU MAF and tune it via a J3 chip (look at tiperformance forum) and you should do around about 200kw at the flywheel, the engine spec will be pretty similar to the AU motors. the stock top end is very restrictive.

For starters is it an auto still or a manual?
If its an auto find a manual conversion and fit that.

It's a 5 speed manual, and the exhaust has been cut and dumped either side under the rear doors.. we are running 2 hotdogs mufflers.. it's loud and we have lost some back pressure. We will most likely redo the exhaust again, but were waiting to see whether a few more herbs in the engine would sort out the backpressure issues. also running stock extractors..

Extractors , decent exhauast and a set of underdrives is a cheap , easy power increse.
Also are the trcks your driving tight tracks or ones with some nice straights? If you are running on tight track sI would look at a lower diff ratio to give you more punch out of the hole at the expence of some top speed.

hi , do all the little things first. spark plugs , fuel filter , replace air filter with a k&n filter , drill holes in the front of the air box , then look at a set of headers with high flow cats. with the exhaust just add a x from the rear of the headers to the rest of your system which will help with back pressure and will add hp and a nice sound. you can also get a aftermarket street fire msd coil which fits stock plug and bracket. then you can look at a bigger air flow meter 75mm aftermarket or a 73mm of a au falcon just replace the electric sensor with the eb one. then replace the pluming to the throttle body wth a nice stainless pipe. this will add 4hp and better air flow. once this is done you can re-set timing. then add a pe-tune j3 chip. this will give you around 175 rwkws or 248rwhp.

heres a photo of my dyno sheet. this is with the standed air flow meter and with out the j3 chip.
once i add the j3 chip and the bigger air flow meter i should make 20+ more hp. |

You don't want back pressure, it is a by-product of exhaust design (i.e. not in itself useful). As this is a track car I would get a set of headers to suit mid-high rpm, low cpi cats (gotta be good to the environment), then straight pipe to the diff. Back pressure is usually associated with a system designed to perform at low to mid rpm (which is generally more restrictive up top giving the wrong impression that backpressure creates torque). It isn't backpressue creating the torque though; it is the system having more ideal gas velocities at the lower rpm it is designed for. On top of this there is exhaust pulses etc but I won't go into that. As this is a track car you will want to spend most of your time between peak torque and peak power, which once you finish engine mods will be in the mid-high rpm. As such you want a system designed for this (keeping in mind your bottom end torque/power will suffer). ALSO I'm not a guru on v8 off the shelf systems, but I'm fairly sure there can be fitment issues depending upon what head is on the engine (and any head you may want to fit later, I could be way off with this though).

There is one set of extractors for these that suits both E7 and GT40P heads.
Apparently is also one of the near best performing. Hitech Headers. The Look Good, and according to BestMufflers are the ones that work with both heads. Id confirm that with Hitech of course. 3.9 / 4.1 diff ratio and maybe mini spool ??
If you don't yet want to pull engine apart ?? A set of 1:72 roller rockers will suffice till you get around to a better cam..As said AU induction with maybe Performer inlet?? If it's lowered ?? Double check pinion angle and watts link geometry ... Or it will over steer on bumps.. When engine is out strengthen inner front suspension on top inner joints..
