Hi,

I have been chasing a problem with my car for a while now, just thought I would ask for some advice.

Basically it stutters a bit off the line and in the lower rpm (0-1700) it surges if you hold it. Sometimes its not so bad, other times its really noticeable.

I have had the dizzy shimmed (it was moving a bit) and changed the spark plugs, looking at what I should aim for before spending more cash on things that wont help.

The old plugs I pulled out looked white on the ends so I think it needs the timing looked at.

Other than that what else could it be?

No I havent, was thinking if the timing is ok then I should replace the fuel filter and maybe even pump.

do some trouble shooting before you start replacing things you "think" are faulty otherwise you"ll pour in more cash than you have too.

start with fuel filter

have fuel pump pressure and flow tested

check fuel press reg is operating within spec

possible clogged injectors (maybe try a carbon clean before removing injectors for a sonic clean)

this is just the start but gives u a bit of an idea

So I got a few more things done and my mechanic is stumped and so am I...

I had the fuel filter replaced, fuel pump tested and all the lines and injectors pressure tested. Everything is perfect.

I bought a second hand MAF from a guy in Bris and put that in, didnt really make any difference,

I had the rails and injectors cleaned also, the car is running better, but it still surges badly when cold and gets a little better when warm.

I am not sure what else to do, is there a way I can check for problems with the ECU? The mechanic says his computer doesnt pick up and diagnostic codes.

Its just starting to really get annoying, I could buy a set of leads, but for $130 its not going to help the issue as it has to be something fuel related.

Any ideas??

EDIT: I forgot to say in the first post that it back fires through the air box when you give it a boot, then its like it has no power and surges and what not. Doesnt do it all the time though.

Checked the Engine Grounds? - theres one at the back of the engine for the o2 sensors.

Check also Battery to Body and to Engine for Earth Leak/Voltage Drop. Your symptoms seem the same as LPG people get on the falcons - when the O2 sensors arent able to be read properly. OK at WOT as the car switches to open loop

I check over the earths, one at rear of engine was loose, didnt make any difference.

I am going to guess that the o2 sensors are no good, they are most likely the ones that came with the car.

That one is the one for the O2 sensors.... Did you reset the ECU afterward?

.. not sure of the exact procedure, but disconnecting power to it for a period of time is the go.

Depends. The EEC's are smart, and try and learn around faulty sensors.

That earth at the back of the engine controls all of the sensors. Best to clear the KAM in the ECU to see if its sorted.

Fair enough, I will leave the battery unplugged for the rest of the day, should do the trick.

Try another fuel pump, I had same symptoms once and had changed everything from fuel reg injectors, fuel filter and nothing changed but then I done a swap with another car on a 100% working pump and fixed the problem. My pump was working weak under load.
