Try another fuel pump, I had same symptoms once and had changed everything from fuel reg injectors, fuel filter and nothing changed but then I done a swap with another car on a 100% working pump and fixed the problem. My pump was working weak under load.

I may well try this, but the reading my mechanic got were better that spec for the fuel pressure across the rev range, as far as they could see it should be fine. The problem also doesnt happen when the car is at high rpm, which is where I would expect it if the pump was no good...

No mate, mine was a b**ch at low rpm (was like it was flooding  ) and if I put my foot down it would backfire through the air box but luckily it wouldnt blow it off. Really p****d me off for months. Changed the fuel filter twice, got the injectors cleaned and the throttle body with some throttlbody cleaner and still it was f**k. Then changed the fuel reg to a brand new standard item and that was no different so in the end the fuel pump swap worked.

White plugs, surging on cruise & backfire on acceleration are symptomatic of a lean condition.

Do a KOER and cylinder balance test. That should narrow the cause down.

It could even be a vacuum leak

Just noticed something over the past few days. The auto changes its change points.

When you first start the car and drive it will change into 4th at around 60kmh or when you back off completely.

When it warms up it starts to hold 3rd until 65-70kmh, even if I sit at 60kmh and back off it will hold 3rd.

Would this be part of the problem? How can I fix this?

Check the timing and clean the MAF maybe???

Does it run rich down low??

Check fluid levels in the auto and check the auto's TPS

You'll need to get a multimeter (cheapie $25 one will do this ok) and check the voltage Key On Engine Off. Been a while since i have had to do this but i'm sure you connect black probe to the black wire and red probe to either the red or green(can't remember i'll confirm tomorrow). One of the wires shold have around 5v the other should be around .86 from memory for the auto tps.

You will have 2 TPS sensors, have a look at the harness to see which is which but the bottom should be the auto if it hasn't been played with

Can someone confirm this my memory is a bit hazy

I'd definately be checking the timing

How do you know its leaning out???

This has some good info on timing and TPS settings.

Thanks for that, lots of great info in that thread. Also the timing on the car is fine, I have already checked it.

Cheers

Backfiring through the inlet is timing to me.

White plug electrodes could also be the following

The plugs may be the wrong heat range
Low octane fuel

Post up a pic of the plug electrode if you can

Has the motor been modified
