hello please help!
I have a EF XR8 auto and for the past 2 days it has run very rough. It shakes horibly when its put into drive and shakes and splutters up untill it gets up to 2000 rpm. I have undertaken the following: 1. replaced fuel filter. 2. replaced plugs 3. replaced leads 4. replaced coil. 5. used throtle body cleaner. 6. put in injector cleaner through the tank. After just taking it for a run, non of the above have changed anything. It now does not engage 4th gear. I have checked for manifold leaks and there does not seem to be any, nor any water in the oil. Also, i disconected the battery last night if that causes any issue? Any ideas? |

Your gearbox is cactus. Time for a rebuild or replacement box I am afraid. Freds Autos at Greenacre can do drive in drive out exchange boxes for decent prices.

wait what? he just said his motor is running rough. and you say his gearbox is f**k?

Anything else that you can think that is wrong with the car? some issues can be related to each other i.e solve one solve the other

Unless the balancer is moving, which could be another option, I would be looking at the box. As he has already advised that it runs rough until 2000rpm, both the Box or torque convertor could be causing the issue, I would lean on the box as he has ALSO mentioned 4th gear does not engage. See my logic? Not being a C***, I just feel I am pointing to the route cause. I think the box either needs a major overhaul/rebuild or replacement. We all know Auto gearboxes have 2 basic items Fluid and Magic, It sounds like the box has run out of Magic.

Hello
Thanks for the replies. In regard to the shaking, it also does it in neutral and park, not nececarilly in drive, as I have said. However, it seems to shake more in drive. Could it be the case that there is some issue and the car has gone into limp mode? Ie not engaging third gear? |

Check your harmonic balancer, also check your engine mounts.
When in Limp Home mod the box goes to 3rd gear and stays there. |

the auto won't be going into 4th because it's probably in LHM. The shaking would be caused by it running so s**t.
try cleaning the Air flow sensor with the proper cleaner you can buy. also have you tried changing the MAP sensor? or even checking to see if the hose is on correctly

OP, Replace the balancer, and get the auto inspected.

Despite the gearbox, and that you've checked the manifold.....
My money is on a stuffed intake manifold gasket somewhere. |
