hey guys just bought a ef xr8 that has a few issues took it to mechanic and hes says it might be the big end bearing was just wondering what peoples thoughts were anyway it has a loud ticking noise whilst idling (sounds like rocks in the cats or something but apparently the exhaust is fine) the oil pressure drops right off after about halfa and it blows smoke under heavy accelaration

umm i would say YES big end bearing is gone..

i would not even think about starting it if the oil pressure has dropped off...

cannot say its a big end bearing at this stage. Could be loose torque converter bolts, cracked drive plate, melted cats etc...

let us know if you need a hand diagnosing.

Was shocked when i read this thread, thought it was my el v8 eng! How is that thing?>

Maybe have a leak down test done to test rings? How many kms on motor? If the rings are way gone, piston could be rubbing on skirts.

do a compression test with plugs out-dont start the motor,if ok,i used a mudguard bridge thing to hold the motor when i pulled the k-frame out, with the k-frame out,i changed the welsh plugs in the block, droped the sump and fixed the oilpan screw, changed the oil pump.all you have to do is remove the caps on the rods and check the bearings for wear, same as on the crankshaft, less work than pulling the motor out,i rebushed a new k-frame at the same time.

You don't make sense ??
Rings are along way from bearings..
Could be piston slap though ??
But he doesn't say its burning oil etc..

i havnt really driven it enough to know if its burning oil though it does blow smoke under heavy acceleration so i would say more than likely? i just bought a cylinder compression tester today so im gonna give that a go and see what i come up with. but the fact that the oil pressure drops off after about half hour of driving is what really bothers me, oh and it does run rough but i havnt got round to adjusting the tps volatge and base idle yet

so did a comp test today finally cause i have been so busy but all cylinders came up with 170psi i assume thats good? and i have the engine out now so i will put it in the stand and check the bearings over the weekend, also found that the cats are completely f**k which could have been making the rattling noise in the first place but the drop of oil pressure still has me thinking but will have to wait and see once i get the sump of i guess

Unless the car has been relentlessly flogged windsors are usually very reliable. as the engine is out replace the oil pump and maybe big ends then refit with new cats. I know people with over 400k on these motors and still very strong.

lol didn't even read the post ! :x

Can you explain what the sound sounds like? Same rate as RPM or happens in high or mid rev range?

sounds like marbles in a exhaust can only really hear it on idle cant hear it threw the rev range, since pulling the engine out though i discovered the cats are f**k all rattly and s**t so thats prob what the noise was, still dont explain the oil pressure drop though, and i gotta replace the timing cover housing anyway cause it was leaking so guess the engine had to come out anyway

ok so after futher investigation i found that the connecting rod bearings are fine they are slightly worn but consistant with 200,000 kms and have also found the crankshaft bearings have the hard facing worn of them down to the brass so i would guess that would prob be the problem. doesnt look to be any visable signs of wear on the crankshaft but will know for sure once i get it out and measure it
