Hey guys,

Recently I've had to top my oil up.... a lot. It forever seems to be low/almost empty. I'm aware that losing oil is generally a bad thing but for what I can tell, it's not leaking oil and it hasn't been blowing smoke. Any idea where it's all going?!

It's done about 174,000kms and is pretty much stock bar exhaust/extractors.

Are you quite sure its not leaking??
Put it up on a hoist or ramps and get right under it and check rear main seal and oil coming down from rear valley.

try some penrite hpr 15 (15-60w) These things with higher kms love this oil. Do you do many highway kms? how often do you change the oil? 7,000-8,000km is perfect for regular driving. If your trying blow your motor up every 5,000km. Darn thing keeps getting faster the looser it gets wtf?

Pretty sure it's not leaking. It's parked on a white concrete driveway and there are no real stains on it.

I was thinking about trying that penrite stuff out. Will do so this weekend. I change oil every 8,000-10,000kms~.

Hopefully that fixes it. I'm using Castrol GT2 ( at least, I think that's what it's called. )

I'd use Shell helix Plus 15-50

Most guys on here use this HPR15 s**t and swear by it, but seriously if you need 60+ in your car.... it must be tired.

I had castrol in the mrs's car... and it loved it... I mean Drank the s**t out of it,
I now use Shell in my car and her's and it doesn't use a drop.
Big-W sell it for $24 also... Bonus.

there's your problem right there.

everyone has there favourite oil so you'll no doubt get a lot of suggestions. i wouldn't consider 170000km high. personally i'd stick to the factory recommended grade which is likely to be 15/40. personally i'd also run full synthetic and change it every 4 - 6mnths.

sticking a thicker oil in it will quite often do more harm than good. pumping losses are increased as the engine works harder adn wear can be accelerated.

i'm no expert though but my last car had nearly 300000km on the clock running helix ultra 5w40 with no issues and good oil pressure.

My valve train from 130,000 kms was very chattery on start up using 15/50 semi synthetic. It would rattle its brains out on 15/40 arrgghhhh!!!

Drive the car extremely hard and must say that HPR 15 is great oil. The oil pressure just stays up there even when giving it severe curry.

Had the car dynoed by G&D in cranbourne last year at 140,000km. Darn thing made power to 5,500rpm 156kw rwkw. Glen said it was a very healthy motor for a stoker. Pulled 14.4 at calder.

The bottom ends are bullet proof. The valvetrain does wear a bit but nothing that will rob you of power. I found the roller lifters (main offenders) wear and bleed down quicker with higher kms, thicker oil nullifies this.

The Windsors like or can get away with thicker oil due to bigger clearances , especially in valve area..
These are multy grade oils 15/60 is not a thick oil..Just a wide viscosity...
When these engines where originally designed it was either 30 grade or 40 grade oil... No multy grades or friction modifiers, detergents etc...

How much fluid can be drained after 10,000km? I will have lost about 1L which is pretty normal(for me anyway).

Do you mean before there's issues with low oil or acceptable oil burning???
I would say what its burning... Btw don't top it up! Buy 5 ltrs and change the whole oil and filter...
There are two marks on your dip stick, the closer it is to top the better. But you may find it will use less oil if slightly less oil is in there??
I'd double check PCV at the back of inlet? What I found is lifting valve approx 100mm above where it is now with alloy tube and correct rubber fitting prevents vacuum sucking up oil ....

how would changing the oil every 5000km blow your engine????
mine has been serviced every 5000km since the day it left fords factory and never had a oil related problem.

I'd recommend hpr15, was using hpr10 (10-50w) but found on hot days oil pressure was a tad low at idle, and was a bit of tappet noise, my car has great oil pressure and doesn't use oil has 190,000km.

It was basically an alloy tube where I used Nissan turbo oil return jointer from PCV to alloy tube.. Which fitted tightly into PCV gromet on manifold.. Works like an oil seperator...
