This morning on the way in to the work site, my cruise control stopped working.
The CRUISE CONTROL light on the dash cluster is still lighting up to say I have turned it on but the RESUME CRUISE and the + SET buttons on the steering wheel just stopped engaging the cruise control. ( The ON / OFF buttons on the left side of the steering wheel still light up on the dash cluster ) I decided to stop at the local servo anyway and just check fuses under the steering wheel but all of them were intact - none blown that I could see. After I got home this evening, I popped the bonnet to see if anything from the CC module had become disconnected ( I had swapped the CC module over on Saturday with one from an EF XR8 ) but everything is perfectly in place - nothing loose. Is there anything else obvious I can check that may be the cause of this or do I start looking at the right hand side buttons on the steering wheel as being possibly faulty?

I did that at the servo after I checked the fuses and the brake lights were working fine.

Mine too likes to play silly buggers. It wasn't working for about a week, like you it would turn on, but not engage, now it is working flawlessly and I didn't do anything. I was going to pull the airbag out and check the wiring, but I haven't as yet because it's working....

Either of you checked the switch on the master cylinder? - if it stops working you wont get your cruise to engage either. Its the switch on the front/side of the cylinder, not the one at the rear/underneath
Mind, of course, is er, temporarily bypassed as I dont have one... yet. Just a jumper in the plug to short it. Nigel |

The other day my cruise/brakes wouldn't work, I checked everything but nothing seemed to fix it. Got to my destination and pulled the Park Lamp Relay and plugged it back in...everything worked the way it was after that.
See if that helps you out Vic. If not, is it possible to change the switch over from the old master cylinder and see how that goes? If all fails, your buttons will need a bashing.

I pulled the fuses at the servo to check they were intact and put them back in but no result.
In the morning before I start up the car, I will check what Nigel said to see if something isn't connecting properly. Other than that, still stumped.

My relay is stuffed and gets stuck or something so it was playing stupid on me. Everything worked after I pulled the relay out, gave it a wack and plugged it back in. *shrugs* electrical gremlins...they suck.

So the cable and drum are setup properly ??? The cover clicked in properly ??Why did you swap module's ?? -Master Cyl press s/w, pull plug and jumper the plug, as per Nigel's post. -Clutch s/w plug jumper -RH wheel s/w's You can test all of the above with a meter at the module plug.

I swapped modules because the original one was getting harsher when activating. By that I mean that when I hit the set button, the engine would gun and the speed would accelerate beyond what I set, it would also lag when resuming cruise and basically engage hard and sudden. I bought the S/H one for $19 so not a huge drain on the wallet and while it worked for the last 5 days, it seemed to work smoother than the original module. I'll be out of the house in 5 mins and will check and clean the module plug and the master cylinder switch.

No joy on the master cyl s/w. I replaced it but cc still won't activate.

Have you back-probed the wiring plug to see if your switches are actually making a circuit? Might be the clock spring on the way out.

Good news, problem resolved.
I went back over the mechanical connections and found that on closer inspection, the cc cable had lost the metal clip that holds it inside the plastic assembly under the throttle body. The cable was still sitting inside the assembly so it looked like it was connected. It wasn't till I removed the assembly and turned it over that I discovered the missing clip.

Well done - good summary to close the thread, might help someone else searching for this same problem.
