Just completed an engine transplant on m EL XR8. Has an AU 8 in it now. Yesterday went for a test spin and a wash at the automatic car wash. (Yes I'm lazy!) On way there was running good, nice and poky, did a bottom blast on way into car wash. (Maybe I shouldn't have?) Leaving the car wash all good, half a Km down the road I lost most of power to the engine, thinking it has gone into limp home mode. Now it is really sluggish down low and it won't shift out of first, also noticed econ/power switch doesn't work. ie: Light come up on the dash. Should I be changing the neutral/range switch or would I best be taking it to a place with a scan tool? Or should I be cleaning out the trans plug?

Yeah probably be gearbox loom related. Might have had something blast loose or get wet with the underbody clean.

Have you tried unplugging and cleaning the connectors yet?

Haven't tried any cleaning yet. Happened late yesterday and then had to go to work. Will put up on ramps tomorrow and check it out.

Sounds like a steam related scenario. Common in my Trade with the newbie Detailers. Wait 24hrs then diagnose from there if it's still going on. Next time under car cleaning should be done with a can of cheap Degreaser and a rag.

Still the same. Put up on ramps and changed the range switch and cleaned all the connectors. It is stuck in 3rd gear, 1750RPM@60Km/h. Anyone else offer suggestions?

Did you clean the round connector at the back of the engine? - that goes to the gearbox?

I didn't. Didn't think to because that didn't get wet. I'll try that.

Update on this problem. Diagnostics comes up with a few fault codes. 777 and 778 which say the radiator fans aren't running. Also a TPS fault and also transmission overtemp. Once faults are cleared from ECU they come straight back. Thinking the trans problem was still related to the wiring loom I have removed and repaired it. Still the same problem. Anyone know what to do about all the above faults as my workshop manual does not help at all.

the aftermarket manual i have here says

777 - R/H/S cooling fan not operating - fan motor not drawing current from battery when EEC switches it on

778 - L/H/S cooling fan not operating - fan motor not drawing current from battery when EEC switches it on

My manual says the same too. The fans work when I apply power directly to them. Manual say if TPS is faulty to test it but doesn't say how to. Doesn't say what to check with the fans either although I'll be checking the relays and control fuses.

Yes I do mean throttle position sensor. I feel really stupid at this point in time. Car was booked in today to get the A/C done and all above problems except the TPS was a fuse. And I'm an electrician, face palm. Still TPS fault on scan tool. TPS out of range. New topic coming up.

What manual do you have? I've got Ellery. Back when I was messing around with XC's I had to have two manuals, both would leave out certain bits which the other didn't.
