Just want thoughts on where you guys set your ignition timing to.
I have a stock standard V8 DL LTD, the max ellery workshop manual says 30 degrees plus or minus 2 degrees, but when I went to replace the ignition module attached to the distributor I checked the timing just prior and it was set to 28 degrees. What do you guy's reckon? any reason why 28 would be better than 30? I've set the timing to 30 but I'm a little unsure as to why it would be at 28 hence why i'm quizzing you awesome guys about it. Cheer's

you can go to 31 or 32 but make sure that is at 1500 at running temp

In diagnostic mode mine revs to 1600rpm, why would you guys go up to 31-32 degrees? more power? better fuel economy?

I've found that mine pings it's guts out if it's any more advanced than 30deg +/-2, and I've found that it's gutless if it's any more retarded than 30deg +/-2, I run my ignition timing spot on standard, and it goes well.

I've set mine to 30 as it's the factory setting, then use the quarterhorse to add timing. Mine peaks at 33 I think, but I have had to drop a couple of degrees at max torque because of a tiny bit of pinging. But the factory ignition maps are the same, timing rises to around the mid range where it then drops off a little and then rises again at high rpm. Engines have a lower detonation threshold at peak torque.
You don't have that option if you just twist the dizzy though as it will give you a set number of degrees across the whole rev range, so if you add 2 you will get 2 everywhere. There's an old saying that timing is torque. I run mine on 98 fuel. |

I did the timing on my DF LTD 5L when I bought it just because. It was set to 26 BTDC. I set it to 30 and on LPG it was sweet and went better. But on 98 octane is pinged it's a*** off. So it was set to 28

I've been running mine on regular 91 octane, today it's been running fine, it didn't feel much different to where it was in the first place, MAYBE it was a touch more powerful, might have been in my mind though.
