Gday,
I'm looking to buy an ex-cop Falcon GLi, 1998 V8. Done less than 100000km and in not too bad condition. I thought all the series II's were 185kW but was it just the XR8s? It doesnt seem to have as much power as an 1998 XR8 ute i've driven, auto as well. I saw in other posts the 185kW has the upgraded manifolds.

If its the basic 165kW engine, how hard is it to add the extras to make it 185kW?

cheers

I think it was at the AU series 2 change that the base V8 became 185 and the xr8 became 220. Could be wrong tho

Hey.

Well there wasnt actually a series 2 of the EL... they just re-released the XR8 with the 185kw engine. So at a guess, i'd say that the GLi V8 has only the 165kw donk (GLi v8 very very rare tho!).

Take a look at pics of my engine in the user gallery - in particular, pay attention to the intake manifold. If your manifold looks like this, then you have the 165kw engine.... if it looks "squarer" then its prob the 185kw with the explorer intake manifold...

Thanks guys,
The intake does look the same, so its probably just the standard 165kW engine. Couldn't imagine it'd be too hard to do the mods to make it 185kW though. I would have thought the cops would have got a special ordered more powerful engine... maybe just the ex pursuits.

Ex cop cars are a wank in terms of performance. They change the chip so the speed limiter is removed and a few extra diagnostics can be run, sometimes change the diff that's about it.
Cops drive their cars like they stole them too (wouldn't you if you got handed an xr8/ss to burn around in, with a guarenteed replacement if it breaks?)... So i'd probably never buy one.
Either way, i think it's mostly intake manifold and exhaust that was the difference wasn't it? Not hard to change at all. Do the head and cams while your at it, stroke the f**k, big exhaust and hello big power.

In the E series, cops didn't have a removed speed limit, it was 210Km/H.

Cheers

I've got a Septemeber 1997 EL XR8 that has the updated engine. Explorer Manifold, ELGT extractors and ECU tweeked.
By Ford they claim that it didnt happen until October 1997 so it is entirely possible that mine was first off the line with the update.

That's what I heard, that the 185kw EL XR8's had the Explorer manifold and the EL GT exhaust. That's it.

EF/EL auto speed limiter is at 180.
Police chip modifies this to 210.

Well, you basically get a GLI computer, move the speed limiter to 210, and change the auto shifts to XR6 style, and a couple of little things, and you have a cop ECU.

Cheers

Thanks guys, its definately got the factory extractors, and the exhaust under the body is quite big too. Its only got the 6cyl oval shaped tip at the end though, all factory. A bigger tip would have to make a different as it looks like a bit of a restriction at the moment downsizing that much from two large pipes. How big should the exhaust be underneath the body of the car (not the tip)? I'll have to measure it when I get back home in a week and also check to see if its got the explorer manifold.
cheers
