Hi guys, trying to find out if 6/98 EL XR 8 has GT40P heads. Has explorer manifold as standard.

No EL V8 ever came from factory with GT40P heads.
The GT & FBT did come with GT40 heads though.

http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopi ... 74&start=0 That link only shows AU stuff but...... EL's only had E7's hence the 185kw rating. It's easy to tell anyway, your spark plugs would be sticking out at almost 90 degrees from the side of the head if they were 40p's and 45 degrees for any other head. |

If the heads have these markings on the outside of them then they are GT40P heads but as far as I know, GT40P's only appeared with the introduction of the AU's which I believe is what that link is talking about.

Link is AU specific but the AU never came out till SEP 98. It states OCT 97 upwards.

FbT (NL) Definately had GT40P's from factory. The only car to have them pre-AU, as far as I know.
I know this, because this is one of the key things I was looking for when buying mine, to determine that it was a "real" FbT. |

Well, it's a crap of a location to take a photo of ... here's the best I can do without starting to pull stuff apart
{DESCRIPTION} {DESCRIPTION} It used to mention this on the FPV history site ... but I just went to check, and they've redeveloped the site for the FG and it doesn't look like it's got a history section anymore |

Hmm i thought the FBT's would have had GT40's like the EB/EL GT and ED sprint not the 40P's.
Is there 3 or 4 vertical bars in the casting of the front and rear of the heads?

Is there 3 or 4 vertical bars in the casting of the front and rear of the heads? No idea ... I've never looked at the front, and don't think I can without removing many brackets. I've heard that they got the GT40P's because when combined with the explorer manifold they provided a torque curve that kicked in at a lower RPM than the GT40's, which suited the extra weight of the fairlane. But that's just what I've heard ... so don't quote me on it. It's a common mistake ... I once had an interesting conversation at a car show with an owner of an ELGT who was 100% certain that the engine in my FbT was exactly the same as his ELGT. |

Some further info, from some tickford doco I've collected over the years;
This long wheelbase forerunner to the TL50 was a very special limited edition apart from its tiny 106 production run. It was effectively a long wheelbase version of the EL GT but there were key mechanical differences as it became the first local Ford to offer the US Explorer's revised Windsor V8 with the GT40P heads. It is sometimes known as the Fairlane 195. The special engine in this model featured the GT40P heads, the revised Explorer upper and lower inlet manifolds, 65 mm throttle body, 70 mm airflow meter, Motorsport injectors and special extractors. Torque was lifted to a hefty 410 Nm, a welcome boost for a model that was as spacious and luxuriously-equipped as this one. |
