Hi All,
The brother in-law's alternator has packed it in - 97 EL XR8. I was curious was the alternator the same as the EF/EL 6? 100/110A Mitsubishi electric or Bosch equivalent (BXF-1260A)? Were the alternators themselves the same but mounting bracket etc different? I've come across are well priced 6 cylinder alternator and was gonna pick it up for him but no point if its not compatible and I cant recall of my old 302.... Any help would be much appreciated....believe these were also a two wire connection.. Cheers

Sorry, but the 4L alternators do not work with the V8. You need a V8 specific one.

BenJ Thanks Benj - crap I think I hit the damn report putting and mindlessly entered this response in there - sorry Mods hehe ! - Waggin move that button Incase anyone else is searching through the forums like I was the EL XR8 ALternator is nigh on impossible to source genuine or some non-genuine models through places like Coventrys at the moment and has been for sometime - in WA there is nil stock anywhere and there unable to source them. Ashdown Ingrams have stock and can order in a Mistsubishi non-genuie substitute - same two pin type connection no mods required a straight swap with the 110A rating - normall shelf rrp is around ~$850 ouch.. part number MXA286 - factory ford part for reference was along the lines of EL00103B (dont have my bit of scrap paper with me). Happy hunting!.

Big Kev,
have you tried Dave at A1? im pretty sure he deals with POWERMASTER and they do alternators to suit mustangs so might be worth a try.

I replaced mine recently, about $600 cost price to the auto elec. I had the main positive lead replaced and a couple of minor things done, all up $700. Ouch.

I havnt looked into it, but I assume its the exact one used on the 5L 94-95 Mustang?
They are less than $200 in the US... You can even get a 200amp version

Been down that road just before xmas for my NF 5.0 ! ended up getting one through repco at $545 (OEX brand) it was the cheapest and they got it in next day! was sick of carrying spare battery and leads around, i saw the yankee ones too but i couldn't match my no.s to theirs even allowing for us v aus prefixes - mine was a two pin i think threes seemed to be a bit easier or was that the other way round? some places quoted over $800 and some auto electricians said "no longer available" - lazy turds

Can't you just get the old one rebuilt? most of the auto lecys I used to deal with back in the day offered that service and it was a d@mn site cheaper than you guys are quoting for new.

big problem is parts availability the regulator is around $300 so not really worth rebuilding - unless shonky build
