You should be fine under existing Vic legislation regarding power to weight and engine capacity.

Ok, 170kw was the EL XR8 "1". Not sure on the build date... the intake manifold on the 170kw is called the "HO" manifold. Like this (ignore blower):

Image

The 185kw EL XR8 "2" version used the AU-style explorer manifold, as found in the FBT:

Fuel consumption... well, it's a V8. Ive never owned a 6cyl but by the sounds of it the V8 much worse.

Cant tell you too much more than the last post about the difference in the 2 kw ranges, but to the best of my knowledge, the difference was a 15kw gain by a better exhaust system set up. Ford have a knack for not changing too much about their engines. These 5.0 jobbies have been the same basic setup for years... :D

Fuel wise: My previous car was an EF Fairmont which admittedly ran on gas. I was getting about 17 litres per 100k with that, and my EL XR8 185kw (manual) currently sits on 13.0L/100.

I do give the V8 some stick too dont worry about that, but i realise the dramas with the 6's is that you have to rev them more often and for longer to get comparable performance. Most cars are cheap enough to run if you dont rev them too high. I am getting 150rwkw and 0-100 in about 7.2 so for a car with reasonable performance, i think the fuel consumptions is not too bad at all. I only ever use Vortex from Caltex if that helps any...

The intake manifold is sitting ontop of the engine, next to the black engine covers shown in both these pictures, kinda near the brake booster. Not only do they look different but the manifold in the bottom picture flows much more air than the top one.

Prolly not the best comparison photos, the engine at the top has a supercharger fitted (hang on.... that's mine  ).

yeah understand wot u mean about revving the s**t outta the 6 to get some half decent movement happening. but the manifold thing hes talking about, is that the thing that leads into the engine at the top right hand side in the pics?

The basic 5.0L was 165kw, from EB-EL.

Unsure about EB/ED XR8 but EF XR8 had 170kw thanks to improved exhaust compared to basic 5.0L. Same for EL XR8 "1"

EL XR8 "2" had 185kw thanks to explorer intake manfiold (and maybe GT40 heads, MAF, throttle body)

More the top left of the engine - shiny metal bit. Ignore all the intake plumbing coz i've modified the s**t out of mine (top pic)

As 4.9 said, All AU V8's got the GT40Ps, but the alloy GT40X's were only used on the Series 1 T-series engines. EL FBT and EL2 XR8 utes generally had the GT40Ps too. EL XR8 sedans did not, they still run E7's

See in the first pic how the maniflod is rounded at the left side of the picture(drivers side of motor)
and the second pic shows the manifold to have a more squarer look?
EL XR82s only got the E7TE heads, the AUs got the GT40Ps.
EL XR82s got explorer manifold,EL GT headers,dual 2" exhaust and a 65mm throttle body.
Build dates for the 185kw version are from 10/97 onwards.

So 185KW is obtainable with just the explorer manifold plonked on the E7 heads, plus some exh work. Interesting :)

Not sure what injectors those engines used. Should be fine with 19# (im producing *lots* more than 185kw with the 19# inj) but you'd need to address tuning somehow - maybe via one of Mr Landau's kick-a** MAFs or, obviously, tweecer.

Dont really need any tuning until well above 200kw, and the 19lb injectors are normally fine till around 180rwkw with higher fuel pressure. But yeah you can just throw an an explorer manifold and get around 185kw, the HO manifold is actually the largest restriction. Although the base AU V8 engines also had 185kw, their torque characteristics were far better than the EL 185kw engines.
