Its generally not the thermostat, stock ones are rated at about 190F which is around 1/4-1/3rd on the guage. If it is running higher than that during normal driving and the thermostat isn't sticking then chances are the radiator is a little blocked up. There are cooler 180 and 170F thermostats available, but if the rest of the cooling system isn't decent then they won't really do anything.

I put a 172F thermostat from www.bptmotorsport.com and it always sits on L on my XR8.

Dayco make a DT14C (part number) for the five litre it is 160 degree instead of 190. Engine still gets hot enough and then some to operate normally and it will give you added benefit. new radiators on ebay for around $125 plus postage (15) and replacing water pump wouldn't hurt either.

I would echo EDXR8's sentiments. The thermo should be well and truly open by that temperature so changing the thermo wont do much on its own.

Dont stuff around - replace the radiator or have a decent flush and rod job done.

Be careful changing the water pump as the bolts can really rust up to the alloy timing cover.

Sorry if i have hijacked your thred but it may be relevent to your problem (Maybe )
Mine sits in trafic at at the Betewwn the M and the R in My EF. i think thats way to hot. I have put in a new Radiator and also changed to that dayco 14C thermo and still it gets that hot. Hoghway driving dosne seem to be to bad usually on the M during the day but in traffic. i dont want to change the pump but its starting to look that way is there anothing else that could cause that sought of problem

Lol - it's hard to picture the temperature readings when states as M, R or A.

Place the dash into diagnostic mode and provide the temperature readout provided.

Are you confident the thermofans are both working?

Generally speaking, the main symptom of water pump failure is leaking and sqeuaking as the bearing on the input shaft fails. The fins dont tend to wear to the point where its unable to keep the engine cool.

160F thermostat is a touch too cold IMO, and you could run into EEC problems, the 170's are the coolest most V8's should really run to avoid the possibility of any problems. If the coolinng system is in good condition, the engine will usually run only a couple of degrees above the thermostat open temp. I run a 170F thermostat in mine along with a new water pump, and a new 4 core radiator and it sits nicely at 174degrees, or right on the boarder of cold and the normal range. Chan ces are if your radiator has been in there for a number of years, it will at least be partially blocked. A radiator flush may be some help but you really need a radiator place to take the end tanks off and clean it out properly, or an easier solution is just to replace it.

Hmm, this has got me a tiny bit worried!
Since the Wolf ECU has been installed the Temp Gauge in mine doesnt work, which doesn't bother me.
I've used the Hand controller to check on engine temps,
I have got the Water Temp gauge on my pod finally working, and mine seems to sit ona bit higher than everyone else's here.
On the wolf, normally it sits on 95-102 deg. celcius.
The Water temp gauge is telling me it sits on around 190 deg. Farenheit, but tips over 200 on a hot day.
I just had the radiator flushed a week ago, so....
Now you guys have got me wondering, whether this is alright, cause it runs fine and i was told the Windsors run at 95 deg. Celcius and even above 100 deg.

Does that sound right???

Yep sounds about right if you have the stock thermostat. I was running around 194-200F depending on driving and air temp with the stock thermostat, changed it for a 170F one and it now generally sits around 174F. It would be worth changing yours for a cooler one with the blower, I noticed a 10-15F drop in ACT temps which is great for forced induction.

Thanks Grant,
With everyone saying what temp there was sitting on, it got me thinking!
So a 170 deg.F thermostat, should be no drama, where would the best place be to get one from? Burson's, Repco, etc or the like?

You guys got to be kidding me, if you got payed to worry, most of you would be rich!!!!

Have a close look at your dash and see what it says, NORMAL as long as the pointer is in that area be happy and go on with your life as normal, ie just drive the thing till it goes into the red!!!!!!

And remember that an engine has got to get warm to run probably, if you running engine too cold fuel economy will suffer, and the oil will not do its job probably, and engine clearances will not be correct causing extra wear on vital components, this is why you should warm your car up to operating tenperature before thrashing it as everything is designed to work within the normal range of the gauge!!!
