Hi all,
can anyone recommend what to do to my engine to give me some more grunt, bearing in mind it's my everyday car, i do about 15km per year and i don't want fuel consumtion to go through the roof so nothing too heavy.
my vehicle is an "option 20" ex police car, it's the 185kw version but ive heard the option 20 cars are 205kw as they have forged pistons and a modified exhaust system? ive currently got a 2.5 inch with extractors exhaust as well as a k&n air filter with larger snorkel, looking at spending a couple of grand.
thanks.

helping your car breathe better will free up horse power and improve economy. you already have a full exhaust and bigger air intake.
other suggestions are improve the spark. irridium plugs, silicon leads, better ignition coil...
bigger maf/throttle body, better manifold to go with the exhaust and air intake.
aftermarket ecu or a piggyback chip such as unichip.

although, converting to a manual is the best performance mod you can do imo...

irridium plugs are the ducks guts at the moment. take into account their longetivity when they hit you with the price.
as far as the leads go, silicone 9mm leads will do the job just fine. eagles, champions, your choice

The police pac engines are only 185kw, same as the normal XR8's with a couple of small differences.

Unfortunately the biggest restriction in your engine are the heads and they aren't cheap to replace. You may get another 10-20kw out of it but until the heads are replaced you are pretty much stuck.

For the price id look at manual conversion/diff ratio!

They are the big boys for avg money - bang for buck..

With a manual the taller gears wont be an issue what so ever neither.

The other things listed are all well n good if your car is a heap thats not looked after or not running well as is, if its good now, id look elsewhere and sounds like you want a noticable difference not just "oh, it should gimme few more kw; shouldnt it.."

If you've got a couple of grand, then don't waste your time on (what pretty much is in comparison) s**t!

Either a supercharger, or, buy heads, intake and cam. If you can, install it all yourself. That will save you a bucketload. Alternatively, stay on the forums, make some mates and have them do it for you haha.

I would look at a set of GT40P's from the AU V8's, they flow well and cost around $1000-1200 normally. Whiel doing this changing the rockers to some 1.72 roller rockers will be a good idea and you should get good results. Sepending on how much more money you want to spend, a larger MAF and injectors, better cam and a unichip or chiptorque chip would be good.

the difference between the manuals and the autos is nothing, the manual just feels faster. I would do as others have said and look into heads and intake. I poped the throttle body and EGR off my spare motor last night and the s**t that restricts the airflow into the plenum chamber is unbelievable.

If you go for something like GT40P's, a Crane 2031/2030 cam, roller rockers (pretty much required on higher lift cams) and matching valve springs you would be looking at around 220kw (160rwkw)

Add a larger MAF, matching injectors and larger 65-70mm TB and you should see 230-240kw. A chip would help a bit at this level although the factory EEC is pretty good at adapting to these mods, I would probably expect another 10kw with a chip so all up around 250kw (180-190rwkw). BTW you can keep with the existing intake manifold at these levels, I would only look at upgrading it if you wanted to go further (stroker etc) or you have a spare $1k laying around that you dont know what to do with.

heads, cam, rockers, maf, injectors, chip?
thanks.

Heads $1200, cam + springs/retainers $700, rockers $500, MAF $400, injectors $500, Chip $600, gaskets etc $200+ so all up I would guess just over $4k worth of parts minimum then labour of maybe $1k to fit it I would think. Plus there is the normal unexpected costs.

You can still get good results without spending that much, you can leave out the injectors and run an adjustable reg to bump up the fuel pressure, leave out the chip (the EEC it quite good at adapting, I got 184rwkw with a similar setup without any EEC mods). You can even do a cheap upgrade with just the GT40P heads and some 1.7 roller rockers, won't obviously have the peak power but will have considerable low and midrange improvements, all depends on how much you want to spend.
