Can the distributor on a 5L Windsor in my 1998 XHII V8 be replaced with the electronic ignition from an XR8? How hard is it?

Um... yes it could, but there would be no point in doing so.

The distributor is actually the electronic ignition system. Look at the grey module on the side of the dizzy shaft - this is your TFI module. This basically allows the ECU to control the ignition timing.

So yeah... the dizzy on your XH is actually the same as the XR8...

Unless you are talking about changing to multi coil pack from an AU. Then is requires a new computer and loom.

I agree with Matrin, don't bother changing. What you have got is good.

Does anyone know the most common symptoms of a dying TFI module? Can it cause a slight miss or is it likely to simply go dead?

I'm pretty sure mine is dead at the moment, but yet to try and fix it to confirm this lol.

Mine is idling like a pig, wont rev, black smoke, exhaust gets very hot due to lack of spark in some cylinders etc.

Its a bit more than a "slight" miss. It idles like a top fueler and just sounds completely f**k when you try to accelerate. and i have a feeling its the TFI - others have told me they had the same symptoms when theres died...

I've seen 2 TFIs fail and both died instantly - the car just stopped and would not start till the unit was replaced.
