If the temp gauge always reads right in the middle of the normal range, is it possible it still may not be right and causing excessive fuel consumption due to engine temperature not being right?
Just another item I want to change in an effort to better my poor fuel consumption. I'm thinking of just going a standard ford stat, not an after market lower temp one. Thanks.

if its in the middle of the normal range then its at normal operating temp so its running fine...if it runs too cold it will actually use more fuel, similiar effect to having the choke on in a carby car

I dont see a problem with the temp gauge sitting in the middle.
Mine sits just below the middle, depending on how im driving it, If i am doing some hard driving, it will move pretty much dead middle... but generally will be a couple mm below middle. My fuel economy is around 12.2L / 100km... and i get about 550-600km per tank. I consiter that pretty good. You can also control your fuel consumption by limiting the use of the right foot lol...

understand this guys but what if the stat is actually giving a false reading?
I get 350-400km per tank mostly city driving, on a full highway trip it's 550-600km. I still think the "option 20" computers in these cars are to blame.

ive found it to be pretty accurate, i do a mixture of city driving and highway driving... But from a full tank, i would gaurantee over 500kms a tank - untill the light comes on. How many Litres do you have when the light comes on?

i don't have a trip comp so I couldn't say.
68lt tank, say light comes on after 60lt used? balance is reserve? most times it's around 350km mostly city driving, I'll get over 400km but shes just about bone dry, hence being able to fit a good 65 odd litres in when I next fill up.

Hmm, do you put your foot into it at all?, even though it is city driving, 350ks isnt much... it should be at least 400-450...
ive done full tanks in city driving, and i usually get over the 450 mark. And just look at my age, and that will tell you how i drive ... with the foot on the floor! ^^ untill it hurts my wallet

nah, rarely put my foot down hard, car runs beautifully though!
i was under the impression cars ran poorly with high fuel consumption?

It is possible that you are just running really rich... when i got my car i could only get 350ks out of one tank, and after a good tune i had great economey, and felt like it was a bit more responsive/powerfull.

Take it into Ford, is your best bet, but that can get expensive... so the other way could be to take it to an auto repair/mechanics place... they usually have the equipment to tune your car properly. I didnt take mine to ford, im not made of money!!
Mine felt great when i got it, very responsive and powerfull.. But it feels alot smoother now that its running properly. A service, and new plugs could also help with your economy... there are many things that could be wrong... or just need adjusting... but the best bet would be a good tune/service.

it's been serviced and more right throughout.
Ford? not a chance, I learnt my lesson with them! they haven't got a clue about their own cars. I'll find someone who can tune it properly. Taking your car to Ford is like throwing money down the drain, no one can afford that. Thanks for your help. The journey continues

As the other guys said, the temperature sounds normal to me. I get anywhere from 1/3 on the gauge to 2/3, depending on driving speed/outside temp etc.
Also as you've got a later XR8 you've got the 3.45 diff ratio, which will give you a slight disadvantage in economy to the standard 3.23. Maybe only 5-10% worse but obviously faster take off. Mines a 3.23 ratio and last time I filled up I got 542km from 61 litres, which is a lot better than what i expected - worked out to be about 11.3L/100km. |
