Looks awesome. What sort of paint did you use. I wanted to get mine done in body colour when I did the rest of the car, but was told that the paint wouldn't handle the underbonnet temps...

VHT paint is the stuff you need. I did mine in it because its made for high temp applications. Their calipar temp paints are even higher temp capable.
If you click on this site {DESCRIPTION}, go to the bottom of the page and click on the pdf file picture to see the paint colors and temperature ranges of their paints.

Its just the Holts paint in the aerosol.First i sanded the alloy part to smooth it down then filled the logos with bog then primed it.The plasatic part at the front was primed then sanded then primed and sanded a few more times to make it smooth too.
Followed by the colour of choice, then the XR8 and Tickford logos then clear over the top of it all.

sweet. i know it may sound stupid, but with the sanding did you start on a rough grain and work your way up to like a 1200, or was it just a case of a light sand ?

I used 240 grit on the alloy part.

just curious, dont know much bout the E series V8's, wouldnt that big cover just hold in heat, much like the turtle shell cover on genIII's? i know thats probably the first thing they take off ls1's when they go in for performance work...

Im not a mech but I had someone tell me that to make the engines run cleaner, they run hotter. The idea of an engine cover is to aid in air flow. Best example (as my XH/EF/L engine bay is all I have seen) is to look at an EF, as you will notice there is only one intake at the front of the car. Anywhere else air may flow through from the front is covered up. This way the air flows straight to the radiator, then onto the engine, then the idea of the cover is to help pass the air over the top of the engine to keep it cool. I know that down south you can get away with taking the covers off, but up here in Darwin you can get cooling troubles if you take them off....at least thats what I've been told

Engine covers are only for looks....and I reckon they all look like s**t!
They cause premature ignition and harness failure by trapping all the heat in and a reduction in power due to heat soak. They run the engines hotter for better emissions....nothing else. Whoever said they cause overheating problems when taken off has got their hand on it.....Chuck the f**k things away. Pete. |

I'm curious how you fit the engine cover with the XR8 plaque as I have a 5.0 Litre V8 one with my explorer manifold and thought I would have to get rid of the cover all together. Did you have to add holes for screws or did it hold with the existing mount points? Cheers |
