Hi all
Will be installing my new radiator tonight. Unfortunately the car is facing the wrong way in the carport. It currently has no radiator and therefore no coolant Say i was to start it, back it out and back it in again - bad idea? I just need 30 seconds of egine running, reckon itd be alright? Or should i tough it out?

Okay, maybe 40. lol
Nah im just wondering if its important to have the heads and cylinder jackets full of coolant before any combustion takes place.

Nope, you'll be fine. You'd probably get off with 1-2 mins.
You could drive it for as long as it would normally take the thermostat to open, as long as at that point you had lots of cool water to start circulating

HAhaha. Terrible, yeh.
I'd say you could go even longer without coolant on those cast iron heads Start to worry when the temp guage starts reading (on an empty system)

Now the concern is getting the prick home! lol. Might have to wait until rush hour disappears (doesnt take long here) before lugging it over to the bus stop.
"Is that a radiator in your hand or are you just happy to see me?"

"Is that a radiator in your hand or are you just happy to see me?" Lol, call me stupid, but id be pushing my car out, and then back in. Ive dropped off waterpump belts before, and the rate the ttemp gauge rises, even full of water, is astounding. But it makes sense

Andrew, youre stupid! heheh I guess when you talk about dropping belts, thats when youve been out driving? The engine is already warm at that point, and in need of constant cooling. If we're talking about a dead cold engine which is at ambient temperature, it would take a good minute or 2 of mild running before it would be a problem. Think about how much driving it takes before your temperature gauge moves in the morning on a cold start.. I can get 1km before it even budges, which is somewhere around 40deg coolant temp.

most top fuelers don't even have cooling systems and look at how hard they go!

The stuff they use for fuel cools heaps thats why you see them spray the butterflys on top of s/c...You often see ice on them on humid days...
