Hey mate, what sort of car you got?
I got a 5.4L and has a single 3" with a single muffler mandrel bent for $565. That was for the cat back system (Ian Diffen Jobbie). And for the Cat's, last time i got one from ian diffen was $250 fitted and that was a 2.5" High Flow Cat. So if i got 2 cats and the exhaust together id expect to pay $1000. If you can get your twin 2.5" for $1100.00 id say that's a reasonable price

forgot to ask what brand the cats were im asuming somethin half decent. i have a xh ute
atm im kinda really wanting to fix the problem. i just put extractors on and had to fit the stock system jus so i can keep drivin it. and in the process of puttin it on the hoist the y pices cought on it and bent it out of shape a bit but really messed up the bit over the tail pipe as it was cracked now its got a gaping big hole. and i have no cats whats the go with backpressure on these things. obviously i need it. it was gutless drivin it to my mates work with just extractors on. i currently have no cats and a straight tru hotdog. what is the idea configuration? i no i need cats to |

Backpressure (as in its natural meaning) is never needed; it is a byproduct of design, i.e. you don't design a system to have pressure, but is rather 'tuned' (as for lack of better term) to perform in one area better than another. For example, bigger bore (with same cats/mufflers) flows more, but has a lower gas velocity meaning it loses thermal efficiency and loses torque down low, but gains torque up high where a smaller bore exhaust would become a restriction. Shorter systems are also generally better for torque production higher up in the rev range but may detract from low rpm torque depending upon length. Reason I am only saying generally as it depends on a lot of factors not disincluding pulse or pressure wave tuning which in itself could take up an engineering thesis.
Point being, once you fit a full length system you won't need to induce any "backpressure". With the cats make sure you check brands as many highflow cats are ripoffs, but for $300 I'm sure you would be getting a decent quality cat.

The mufflers actually look pretty good, they are a centre/offset with fibreglass inside for a deep note. The reason I went for the 2.5' pipes and mufflers is that I don't have a mandrel bending machine at home and the bends will be crushed a bit. Otherwise I'd go for a 2.25' mandrel bent system instead. Still, there are plenty of exhaust shop pansies around that only do off the shelf systems as custom jobs are too hard for them. That is why I'm going DIY or backyard fordmods performance. |

haha, I know what you mean, although last time I did an exhaust f**k up the angle of the flange when I welded it on the cat twice. Had only done spot welds but still highly frustrating when you don't have hoist and struggling to get under there.

My eb v8 went slower with mandrel bent extractors than what it did with stock headers, it was heaps louder but thats about it and lost most of its bottom end too. I would get press bent extractors if i could do it again, because i would rather have a faster car than one that has pretty pipes.

I've got an XH and just had a system done this week. Here is what I got:
Pacemaker PH4000 headers - $750 Hi Flow Cats - $600 Single 2.5" from the cats back (with muffler) $300 Labour - $300 = $1950 I wanted to go for a twin system but the bloke who installed it said that a single 2.5" was plenty. He does a lot of custom work and has a good name around town. I'm really happy with the result. Nice deep note that comes out when you step on it and has gained heaps of power right through the rev range. Hope this helps.
