Bought a 220kw AUIII XR8 2 weeks ago, it has a bit of a ticking noise in the engine which i thort was just the lifters being a bit noisy (as fords do).
iv had my mechanic look at it coz im not to good with internals, he recons its a worn camshaft, he says nothing to ergent but me being a P plater with an 8 cant help but give it a little bit of a flogging every now and then... the thing is now, when it idles after a minute you can hear what sounds like a electrical wire arking under the air box... it sounds like its just on the inside of the wheel arch behind the plastic stone guard... any suggestions on what it might be? lol this is just 1 of 4 things my mechanic said needs doing...

not to sure if your car has this, but would it be the carbon canister making the ticking noise

well yes and no...
the only thing to come of me flogging it is the arking sound, the cam and timing cover is just plain f**k annoying... then the typical used car things, i just managed to get all of them... oh and the question was any suggestions on the arking sound? lol like u never flogged a car before... i dont think there is anyone on here that hasent...

Ah hang on theres a cam phaser, that usualy stuffs up and makes a tick noise or its the carbon cainster, which is a common problem on the au xr8s

i dont know y u added ur still on p's and are flogging it around. not really useful info for ur problem.
i'm pretture sure the carbon canister is under the passenger wheel arch, and they will always make a ticking noise, some louder than others. there is a service life for the canister, but i dont think any1 would ever change it, and the noise is from the solenoid not the canister itself au v8's dont have a cam phaser, just a sync sensor, which seems to make a squeel type noise when the bearings get worn, rather than a ticking. ur noise from the engine could possibly be a leaking exhaust manifold gasket. its pretty common with windsors. has it got extractors or factory pipes? also these have roller hyd lifters, i doubt the roller would be causing a ticking sound, and if it is a collapsed lifter it actually is urgent, i would't be driving it if thats the issue. how good is ur mech? |

yea my mechanic is pretty good, they do allot of performance work... i would say i wouldnt trust anyone else with my car but lately they just seem to brush me off because i bought a AU3 XR8 istead of a gen3 calais... he said its not a gasket but it does sound like something in the exhaust... sounds like a small crack in the right header to me but... the car performs magicly from what i can tell... but should i get a second opinion?

Hey mate I don't have much of a clue to your problem but If you're seeing independant motorsport in morwell I would get a second oppinion - im not trying to diss them or bad mouth them in any way but i have heard hit and miss stories from differant people with different types of cars, so IMO it would be worth another mechanic looking at it.
Hope you get it sorted bud Cheers Grant |

i would be going to see some1 else. shouldn't matter what car u take there, they should be taking the same approach with it. if u think its in the exhaust, possibilities are a crack or leak in the manifold, leaking gasket at either end of the header, or a burned exhaust valve.
title of ur thread isn't really deserved either, its not like its fallen into a pile of bolts just yet. take it to some1 else who doesn't think ur better off with a gen3 calais. |

The ticking noise under the airbox is the purge valve on th carbon canister. 99% of Au 5l had this problem, annoying sound but perfectly harmless and won't cause you any grief. As for your other issue I'd definatly get a second or third opinion, he doesn't seem to have a real good idea of what he's trying to diagnose and it may end up costing you big $.

Thats what the ticking noise is. The "Tickord Tick"- its known as, i think wrapping it in foam can mask the sound but as stated, isnt damaging in any way. |
