im bout to buy a new car having just sold my ef xr6 now im looking at either an EL xr8 or a ef or el fairmont ghia 5 litre. I want an XR but at the same time i see more value for money in a ghia due to its leather interior and full electrics.
Engine,Box and gears wise is there any differances between the winsors in the xr's and the fairmonts? Any help on my decision making is welcome. |

Only difference is the 185kW EL XR II which was brought out after about Oct 1997, whereas the EL Fairmont Ghias all got the 165kW no matter what year.month it was made. Quite easy to pick up those extra kilowatts with extractors and a decent flowing exhaust.
Pretty much it comes down to the agressive front of the XR with the twin lights, with a falcon interior with sports seats and front power windows, or an el ghia with climate control, cruise, trip computer, leather. I went the ghia because I figure the XR is too much like the falcon, having only standard air conditioning and no climate etc. Either way I think you'd be happy with your choice but depends on what features you see as more valuable to you |

Forgot to mention, Ghias are speed limited to 180km/hr, the XR have an alloy tailshaft, both Ghias and XR's got 3:45 diff gears and the ghia has the premium sound with 6 stacker cd, i think it was an option for the stacker in the XR.. Ghias also come with speed sensitive steering!!!!

me personaly i'd go ghia, the power is easy to fix, extractors, exhuast, cam, air filter, snorkel, underdrive pulleys, MAF, TB, Intake manifold, Heads, you'll have a heap more after that....., thats if you wanted to go that far with engine mods

if you're planning on upgrading the heads/intake/cam/suspension then the benefit of the xr is killed straight away.
other than that it all depends what you personally want.

I personally prefer the GHIA, but thats just me. 1 i am getting older, 2 i am lazy and dont need a manual, and 3 i like climate and leather. I have fixed the power proble, and also changed suspension and fitted larger rims, and mine was factory with XR rims and suspension

Ghia is also insured as a luxury car whereas an XR is a sports car = $1000 insurance difference with some companies...

Bonnets for higher series cars (monts, lanes etc) are also higher.. The extra space may prove to be beneficial if you intend to get a bigger (but not too big intake manifold). Otherwise, bulge. :S
