My Fairmont wagon 5L seems to ping under load, when accelerating and up hills. Its ok under light throttle though.
Also takes longer to start than it should, cold or hot. Should fire up pretty much straight away! The timing is correct, plugs/leads good, MAF good. Is it possible the fuel pump or injectors??? Its running on petrol only. My previous 5L LTD ran perfect with absolutely no hesitation on excellaration, all i did was clean the MAF. Both done about same kms. Thanks if you have any clues. |

Fuel pressure? Change the filter and see how it goes.

Mine pings if i use 92 octane fuel so i just use 98 or 100 instead. Changing the filters a good idea too. I changed mine recently and i reckon it was the original one that it left the factory with

check the vacuum hose leaving the distributor and heading under the manifold. My mates v8 pinged and when the mechanic found this hose was split and replaced it, no more pinging.

My car use to have that all the time, you know it's not good for the engine, but it sounds terrible so you just have to fix it cause of that. It use to happen to me especially when the weather gets warmer. I'd be inclined to swap the MAF and see how you go. Then replace plugs, make sure you have the correct ones. Timing should be 30 degrees. But I found that 27-28 degrees for my stock engine prevented pinging.

I run 34-35 degrees timing on my eb but i run 98 all the time, also the comp isnt too high so that helps

No vacuum advance on this motor. |

I'm still thinking it's either fuel pressure or MAF. An intake leak somewhere will also contribute to rough running due to a lean mixture.

I backed off the timing a little and the pinging seems to have disappeared and the same time engine runs smoother and have more usable power and trans shifts nicer.

Good to hear youv'e solved it.
Run her on 98 and you'll get nicer running and starts. I'm getting 14.9L/100 city cycle in my EF! Mike

Most definitely run on 98, because mine gets 14.5-14.7 around the city.
I use caltex vortex 98 because it gets better mileage than ultimate in my car.
