Does anyone know of an old Jag (say 1970's) with a ford V8?? I like old jags and wouldn't mind getting an old one and get concessional rego (cars over 30 years) and put a 351 Windsor in it. Can this be done?? I've seen them with Chev motors but i want a windsor or clevo up front.

yeap i have seen a few with this engine swap through my business, its a really nice conversion if done well, they are a heavy car and the v8 works well. cant beat the handling and ride from a s1-3 xj that is looked after.

The MAIN reason Chevys where transformed into them was they had G.M transmission already there...Not that an FMX or C4 couldn't do the same job...
V12 engines would be TOOooo expensive...
Actually the Ford / G.M engine are lighter than the straight Jag six...

the jag V12 has been around for ages..... way back to the E-types and earlier..... funnily enough the jag straight 6 was better than the V12.....

firstly the v12 costs the earth to rebuild, from experience i can tell you that getting the heads off them can be almost impossible, they are studed heads and there is s**t loads of them and the corrosion around these head studs is herendious. The twin cam head idea was very expensive, they use the 24 valve heads off the later xj40's. they suffer from head gaskets blowing, harmonic balancer key ways flogging out, oil leaks , the list goes on.... FORGET IT.

A nicely tuned v8 will produce the power of a v12 and be reliable.

The best part of the Jaguar v12 is the crank, its a f**k work of art.
just a pitty the rest of it falls apart.

Also no V12 engined jaguar was ever positive earth only the six cyl in pre 1960 ish

and the final nail in the coffin of the V12 idea..... just imagine the rego costs!

Yeah, the V12 would be nice but too expensive for where i am in life at present. I suppose i could go chev if it was cheaper horsepower and bolted to the original tranny. I wanted an early 1970's XJ6 to do the conversion on. Does anyone know if these were 3 or 4 speed autos?? What other mods need to be done to get approval (in QLD) for a V8. I assume not many considering it was a well engineered car but who knows with the ADR.

I heard the V12's motors ending up having alot of reliability issues. So most people opted for the 4.2 litre 6. I worked with a guy who bought an old 75 jag with a 351clevo in it. It looked cool in pearl white

eb xr8

Early jags where 3 speed auto, its a borgy 35. they only went to 4 speed in 1987 in the xj40's. V12 had a turbo 400 3spd in them. The turbo 400 is a better and stronger box by far.

As far as engineers cert goes you should have no problems, as long as you make sure you are complying with the emmision control rules. early jags fitted with the 4.2 6 had Stromberg or SU carbys with basically no emmision control equipment, the late s2 xj6 had an air pump and egr system, and the s3 was injected, so keep that in mind.

early s2 is my choice, preferably a coupe (RARE).
