Guys I think the auto on my NL LTD may be on its way out, I was wondering what my options were with a replacement box, am I limited to EB-AU V8 boxes or will a I6 box bolt up using the V8 bellhousing?

V8 boxes. E series only. Unless you want to shorten your driveshaft and cut a hole in the trans tunnel to accommodate the AU boxes, they are about 50mm longer than E series.

Get a manual

Depends how much you want to spend, lots = Mal Wood T56, very little means E series V8 BTR from wreckers.

Can use AU Auto's in E-Series! The Auto box is the same, Manuals are where the difference is.

As far as I know all the eseries V8 boxes are the same although I didnt realise an AU V8 box was longer!

Wheres the difference between the I6 and 8 boxes? If an I6 box was bolted to a V8 bellhousing it still wouldnt go?

I6 and V8 have different input shaft lengths. Not sure about the auto internals.

you can have the auto out of my V8 EL, as soon as I get a manual to put in it!!

While on that topic, what's the most cost effective way of converting my EL to a manaul?

I've heard many different things, and many different prices.

Can anyone fill me in with some decent advice?

Mal Woods have quoted $4100 for supplying everything including a reconditioned V8 T5. I was hoping to keep it around the $2K mark.

V8 internals look the same but are made of much stronger materials so, nobody should fool themselves into thinking they can just chuck an 6cyl box on there apart from obvious case differences.
If you really want to stay 4spd auto.....
Another option is to source a 4R70W from the U.S. and control it with a Baumann Optishift. Or you can use a '94-'95 5.0 Mustang EEC and use it to control both engine and trans via something like a Moates 1/4horse.
Starter motor posi is an issue(it's on the drivers side) but otherwise it'll bolt up and they are very strong and can be built much much stronger too.

Fordpro Wreckers in Smithfield NSW last I heard were $2500 second hand.. Honestly though, what Mal Wood offers is excellent. When he says everything is included, that means everything; maybe except Transmax Z. You don't have to buy this $100 part here or that $100 part there and the gearbox you know is good and you don't have to change it again.

NO, BTR95's (EB-ED V8's) don't interchange with BTR97's (EF onwards V8's). They are very different electronically both inside the transmission & also the TCM.

The BTR's are plenty strong for most applications. An electronic shift kit with a mild setting is a worthwhile upgrade to promote longer friction plate life.
