Hi guys.

Can someone give me a run down of how the heater tap on an EF works? What is the mechanism that takes the input from the heater temp control (Futura - basic heater, no cc) and opens/closes the tap?

Where does this mechanism enter the engine bay?

Cheers
Martin

I think if it is the same as an el it will be vacumn operated setup e.g when you turn your temp dial from hot to cold it will open and close the tap via vacumn i had a bit of trouble with mine and ended up replacing it cause it was stuffed.

Cool. Thanks nick!!

So there's a vac line that goes to the heater tap itself... but the knob on the dash has a cable doesnt it?

So there's something in between.... ?

The temp control runs the cable to the airbox, which controls the blend door position. The temp control also controls vacuum to the heater tap valve - vacuum to close the valve, no vacuum to open the valve.

IIRC the V8 valves control both heatercore hoses, as opposed to the I6's one hose.

^ awesome, thanks for the post.

Yeah the heater tap controls flow through both hoses - i question the value this adds but anyways....

The airbox which the cable goes to - would this be located behind the firewall?

Yeah, eventually the taps will leak, doesn't matter what model car - my old HR holden, torana, etc. Possibly the tap could be removed and the vaccy line blanked, and the blend door control hot/cold on it's own, be better for the heater core to have coolant going through it all the time.
Anyways, you can get to the cable adjusting end by popping the glovebox lid - pull the CRT LP fuse if the glovebox light is annoying :P .
