Im putting an ed windsor into my 92 maverick and thought the engine was all good because i heard it run and it only had 200k on the clock.
Anyways ive pulled it down and its in a miserable state, the nylon off the timing gears has made a real mess of the bearings and cam. Soooo i am gonna rebuild it and want to know wat you guys think would work for maximum torque. it has to go over the pits and look standard so it has a few restrictions-
Has to run all standard top end stuff
standard ecm (j3 chipped)
standard air intake
standard emissions items
So wat do you guys reckon? I am going to get a j3 chip so if it needs a tune thats ok but it just has to look standard lol. Please im putting the block and heads in to get done on monday so all ideas are needed!!!

explorer manifold off a newer xr8 and some extractors make a difference ive read on here, as the ol windsor has asthma lol,

Yeah got extractors already and looking at an explorer manifold but i dont know wat i might need to change if i go that way..

The timing gears never had any nylon components. Stock they are a double roller with 100% metal gears. I would suggest tracking down the source/cause of the failure before machining away any tell-tale signs.

I have a 5.0 in a test car that has done over 600,000k's. It's a little fumey under heavy load, nothing the PCV can't cope with, but runs well.

Maximum torque = raise the compression by milling the heads. Upgrade to higher flow heads if possible. And the intake upgrade mentioned - including TB. The stock cam is good for low-down torque. No need at all for a chip.

Ok ive spoken to 2 different mechanics and have been told that the standard twin chain sprockets are nylon coated? But sounds good to mill down the heads and i am happy to keep the standard cam if its good for torque Cheers

as said----2 row steel sprockets and chain,no tensioner or nylon coating.up grade heads to gt40p and clean ports,exploreer manifold and throttle body,roller rockers---1.6\1 stock,1.7\1 au3 spec,pistons flat top and shaved heads----.020-.030 thou,calculate ccs to work out comp.ratio before machining.

Those 2 mechanics are wrong.
For maximum low end torque do the following;
1 1/2" headers
1.7 roller rockers with stock cam
65mm t-body(not essential) and port upper to match
1/2" Phenolic spacer
as XA man says mill the heads a smidge for about 9.8:1...polish the combustion chambers while the heads are off.
run a smidge more base timing...don't bother with chip(unless custom tuned)
