Hey all. I posted a topic a while back about a whining noise coming from my transmission...and now...you guessed it...my car goes nowhere. It sh*t itself yesterday and only low gears 1 & 2 work. Any idea whats wrong with it and what it will take to fix? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It would be hard to tell whats wrong with it from that description.
Your best bet is take it to a gearbox place and let them look at it. Cant tell the problem unless it comes apart. You'll be missing your car for a few days I think. |

Yeah you won't know until the pan is off at least. Sounds more mechanical than electronic unfortunately, when the pan comes off I wouldn't be suprised to see a lot of band material or metla in the pan. How many kms on the trans, and has it been serviced regularly?

Car has only just done 125000....I was under the impression the transmission was serviced reguarly but you know these shonky car dealers can feed you a whole lot of crap....I have tried to fill transmission fluid a while back but that bolt on the side is a bastard to get out....is that normal?

I don't think the transmission is meant to be touched during services. However if it has been, the wrong oil will kill them fairly quickly!

mmm 125k is still fairly new, you shouldn't see trans failures at that age unless it hadn't been serviced or you gave it one hell of a time. I assume its an AU if it doesn't have a dipstick for the trans, thats a big problem IMO with these cars, there is no easy way to check the level and top it up if needed. Try and chack fluid level before taking it to the machanic but if it is that it sounds like it has caused other damage as well.

I've got an EL Ghia V8 and the tranny in that is whining too. I got it at 115,000 kms and it was doing it. Got a trans service and the guy said that oil was black and that many cars never get their first trans service before this many kilometers so its a common thing.
The tranny guy said that there was bits of brass from the coil in the radiator getting dragged through by oil in the system and it gets caught in the back gear set which creates the whine. Apparently (15,000kms ago) it could of had 1 week or 1 year left of lifetime, so he couldn't really tell. He also said that a tranny flush wont fix it, and the only thing would get a rebuild - don't know how true this is, he might have just been trying to make money off my a***. Anyway the tranny hasn't gone yet and it still sounds the same so I'll just wait and when it goes either put a strengthened auto in to hold for the coming engine mods or go a manual....do undecided yet so I hope it doesn't go anytime soon. Cheers Oh and I was gonna say I reckon it sounds like your up for a recoed tranny.....had a fairlane with the tranny go and ended up losing reverse at a maccas carpark. Anyway, good luck with it all. |

sounds like your pump s**t itself and it went into self destruct mode there should be a nice slurry in the bottom of the pan by now. Or maybe the bands just disintegrated, either way there would be crap all through the tranny, better to get an exchange. Lokk carefully through this months "just parts" magazine I am sure I saw a mob doing reasonable price boxes for these cars. Sorry to be doom and gloom but you need to prepare for the worst big boy.

Mine whines like a drunken pro, but only in first. I change the fluid every 5000km's and it is usually black as when its done, but i do pound the hell out of it. One day it will go pop, then a manual will go in

If I was you with an XR8, I wouldn't hesitate about going manual.....especially when selling, although people say that autos have a higher resale value, a lot of people only look for a manual and will pay the right price cause I don't think there is many around. Should be able to do a conversion for under 2 grand.
Whereas in my situation, going manual means I lose the woodgrain and chrome shifter/surround, I'd lose the speed sensititive steering which is controlled by the ECU, but on the upper hand manual is more fun and gets more power to the wheels. So it is each to their own but a manual EL XR8 is definately a must IMHO. Cheers. Is it a series 1 or 2? Bodykit? Rims? Engine mods? |

Is there a good desciption on how to do this daunting task? Would it be better to do it with some mates or get someone to do it?
