Alright, I was driving today and off the lights reved it fairly well up to about 5500rpm, through 1st, 2nd and 3rd, it seemed to have a bit of a weird vibration to it as I was accelerating and I only got to about 90km/hr, pulled up did a U turn and this is where I noticed major vibrations coming from the engine.
I pulled up, popped the bonnet and the engine was shaking more than its supposed to and made fairly strong vibrations through the rest of the car. At 1000rpm, it shakes the worst, and 1500rpm it barely shakes at al, then from 2000rpm and higher it starts to get vibrations back. When driving there is no unusual noise, just feels like an imbalance in the engine. Initially I was thinking that one of the mount points to the engine might have broken as the front of the engine seems to vibrate more than the back. I've no idea what else it could be, but I think it's definately related to a mounting point of the engine. Any suggestions on what else it might be, cause I don't think this is going to be a cheap fix. Thanks for all advice beforehand!!!! David |

Hey Mate,
I have a similar thing in my EB V8. Its been hapening for as long as the engine's been in the car, not sure if it was present in the donor car. For me, under light load in Neutral, from idle to 1200rpm I can feel it vibrate through the whole car, and above that it seems to go away. The only other operational issue I have is excessively high fuel consumption (20L/100 from very quiet driving), instant fuel consumption will hit 50-80L/100 under light load. Now I do know that both the side engine mounts are worn.. but we were able to lift the engine from the lift points, and the crossmember, suspension and all attached components held on.. so they must be strong enough to carry all that weight. I'd love to know what the cause is

Check your harmonic balancer guys.
They screw up and the outer ring of the balancer works itself loose from the inner ring and rubber sleeve. Tough one to check... Mine went on me a while back, we put it up on the hoist and had a good visual inspection - there were points on the balancer where you could see the rubber sleeve protuding from between the inner and outer rings. This is a common fault. If its buggered, aftermarket jobs are available or get a ford replacement for about $170. Brad - what's unusual about that consumption? EDIT: Bugger it, im not finished yet! I'd be saying 90% chance its the balancer if the vibrations come and go... at/just off idle is really bad as the rotating assembly is moving fairly slow and therefore the unbalaced weight is very noticeable... tapers off around 1500rpm as the centrifuge evens things out but then comes back at higher revs as the unbalanced weight really starts to throw itself around... Whilst diagnosing my vibration (read: pretending it wasnt there), snapped one of the plastic mounts the passenger side mirror screws into...

Sure its not missing at all?
Mine did a similar thing when a lead became faulty. Other than that, id look at mounts or the harmonic balancer; not sure where it is tho. Still new to the v8 scene in mech. sides of things.

Sounds like a goer.
Apparently I've got to get a different one for the stroker anyway.. 0oz balance ! Are the AU and EB balancers the same? I'll 'borrow' one from the AU donk

No, unfortunately the AU balancer will be integrated into the back of the crank pulley... the same thing which precludes AU donks from running shane's underdrives... Dan, the balancer is behind the crank pulley, bottom of the engine, dead centre. The crank pulley comes off with minimal trouble on the eseries V8, just 4 bolts, no puller required - might make inspection a bit easier guys.

Thanks for the couple of quick replies.....
After a chat, read and search it looks like the leads will be the first thing to check (this could be the most likely scenario as the plugs were changed a few weeks back and one of the leads were half hanging off). Harmonic balancer sounds like it could be a goer if leads are fine.....so i'll keep you updated on what it might be. Cheers |

Good call. Easy, cheap and quick to check/fix.

I've got fresh leads, and had the plugs changed on the weekend.
I know what a dead lead feels like, we left one off accidently If its producing strong, confident power all the way up the rev range, I'd say its safe to rule out a misfire.

Easiest thing to do first is the leads and plugs if that has not been done recently as well as the dizzy cap and rotor. Just basic maintenance anyway. After that, look at the harmonic balancer.
It 'could' be the mount but they aren't cheap ($200-300). Rather have that money spent on a brand new street aftermarket harmonic balancer. I got one from HPW for around $300. Can't even recall the name.. Pro something. To check the balancer, place the front wheels on ramps and try and see if you can feel the rubber edge on the back of the balancer. If so it's probably screwed. If you'd like, turn the engine on and have a look at the balancer whilst running. Should be pretty obvious if it's wobbling or not.

Also to not, could be a broken spark plug, Busted one in mine from overtightening and it didn't mis as such but vibrated and carried on like no tomorrow. Was only that i could hear the spark arcing out that i caught it

Thanks for the replies fellas. After having a play around i've found all the leads and plugs are fine, which got me looking at the harmonic balancer. Was able to get under the car and found part of the rubber seal hanging about 5mm out the back of the balancer near the bottom. When idleing and reving the balancer was noticeably wobbling although the pulley was pretty still.
Rang up a mate and got a geniune ford harmonic balancer for $135 (brand new), and labour to put it in is $55, so $190 I think is reasonable. Weighing up the price of the rattle gun, 3/4 socket set, balance puller which is required and the time to take out thermo fans and radiator etc was worth $55. Cheers All!!!! |

Kewl. So did it fix the problem?
FYI i paid about $170 for a ford balancer....

The car is going in on Friday so I'll let you know how it goes, not to mention if its not the balancer the mechanics i'm sure will tell me beforehand. I would change it myself but the car is needed this weekend and during that time trying to fit in work and uni just doesn't give me time to fit it - not to mention i'd probably need to spend more than $55 in tools to DIY.
Was $170 fitted? Or just parts? The $135 for the balancer is employee price Cheers |
