Hey guys, I have a EL V8, currently fitted with genies and 2 1/2 inch exhaust, underdrives etc.
I have bought a Cobra manifold (ported), 65mm throttle body, and are getting some GT40P heads that will be ported. What cam and roller rockers would you guys recommend for this package? Ive looked at the Crane 2030, 2031, and TFS 1 cam. I dont really care if it idles bad as this is not a daily driver. I am pretty confused however on what rockers to suit etc. (read: i dont want a stock idle!) , and what cam you guys think is pretty damn good! I eventually want to get around 180-200rwkw with the ported gt40p's and cobra manifold. ( I think it can be done!?) |

It's not impossible but I believe you'll need more air and a tune to get that power at the rear. As for cam, you've mentioned three popular choices. Of the casual research I've done with these cams and those parts I'm of the opinion that the TFS1 cam will give you a little more area under the curve in both power and torque. The best choice would be getting a custom grind based on the flow figures of your heads - if you're willing to go that far. As for roller rockers, get some YT 1.7 rr's and valvetrain to suit the cam choice and you'll be in the territory you want.

Mate, get some P's, knock 30 off them, get some YT 1.73 bolt ons, and a T3 Cam from the boys at CROW CAMS, and buy me a beer when you see me, you will love it. Chuck the cam in 4 up.

Sounds like its gonna be a stout little combo mate, and its all going in a very nice car too . With the roller rockers, as far as ratio goes that all depends on your cam choice, if you choose a cam suited for 1.6's or 1.7's. Although if you go for a cam with a pretty small amount of lift you may get away with adding 1.7's for abit extra lift. For example i went for the Crane 2040 cam (aka. FMS E303) 220*/220*with 110* lobe sep, it is designed for 1.6 r/rockers giving .498" v/lift, i went for 1.7's which brought v/lift upto .529". Also if you want a fairly lopey idle go for something with 110 lobe seperation. The power figure you are chaisng i think is achieveable with a decent tune and more air and fuel.

Thanks for the fast replies guys.
I am planning on giving the capa elimator switch a go (even though i havent seen many results yet), but wanted to get this after the heads/cam/intake were done. Ill keep researching cams, and i will take your recommendations in serious consideration. |

Would GT40p's, TFS 1 Cam, and 1.7rr cause any clearance issues?

I don't think you'll need the 1.7s with the TFS1, its already a bit more aggressive then 2030.
If you decide on the TFS1, I may have a brand new one for sale. Bought off Vic, but now my combo has changed and am looking at something beefier. As an aside, offyaguts/dave, had a similar combo to what you are going with, 40Ps, TFS1, except he had an explorer manifold. Similar car too LOL

I'll fire you a PM.
Combo is going to be generally bigger all round LOL, I was originally going to stick the TFS1 in the stock sprint motor with just new valve train bits and see how it went. Plans change quickly when more power is involved LOL

Yes it more than likely will. A while back in performance ford mag they done an article on a top end modification to a black AU1 XR8. Consisted of AFR 165cc heads, TFS1 and 1.7 r/rockers. They ran into trouble with p/v clearance and the pistons had to be notched. The car was an Auto with a high stall and 3.9 or 3.7 rear end, trickflow street heat manifold, MSD coils and leads, Trickflow phenolic spacer and made about 207rwkw and ran a mid-high 13sec pass.

Ok so basically thats just something i should keep in mind then.
So what roller rockers would everyone recommend for GT40p's & TFS 1 cam? Ive seen some people with 1.6's, and some with 1.7's. I know sylox had 1.6's but was upgrading to 1.7's.. Also what brand ? So far the plan looks like this: Ported GT40P's, Ported Cobra intake, TFS 1, ( insert roller rockers here ) , 65mm T/B , 70mm MAF, Capa chip. |

I have 5spd au111 marlin with, 2031 crane cam, 1.72 yellas, ported gt40ps(back cut and short turn radius' taken out, larger exhaust valves, chambers cleaned out), with a cappa flash tune. producing 223rwkw, it took a top tuner and alot of time and $ on dyno-cappa tune.
make sure you get your pre-load set(with adjustable pushrod), and then get your rocker geometry correct this will get you the correct measurement for pushrod lenght. This has big affect on vavletrain life and helps engine rev.
