this is on my el xr8 series2, my water pump is leaking the smalest amount of coolant from the gasket right back where it sits against the block but the manual ive got only shows how to get the water pump out not the bit that is between the block and the pump, can any1 please help me out?? :( :( i hope that makes sence cos i dont no what the bit im talking about is called. :?

thats the cam timing cover.. thats tricky to get off coz u have to loosen some sump bolts etc..

thats what im on about, just been doing some reading and sounds like it might be a bit of a task. :( any1 know why it would start leaking there??? and any1 who has done this before on a el got any tips for me when removing and instaling?

I did it on mine a few weeks ago. Not a terribly hard task. You do need a balancer puller though.

Remove the thermo fans, radiator and belt, take off water pump pulley, remove balancer pulley using the balancer puller, undo all water pump bolts and memorise where they go, undo the timing case bolts and 4 sumps bolts that are underneath (don't bother replacing the sump gasket), take the timing case off and replace gasket also using some gasket glue making sure the old gasket is off, i recommend using some gasket stripper and have a razor blade handy. Put everything back together the way you took it off and make sure you use a new water pump gasket aswell, refill cooling system and it should be good to go.

thanks for that, doesnt sound that hard to do.
any1 no where to get a new timing cover apart from ford?
and whats the chance of it being just the gasket cos it only leaks at 1 bolt on the left side and got worse when i was hacking at it with a screwdriver.

You can get a cheaper timing cover from Race parts in Qld.Get ready for a shock for the timing cover price from Ford, not to mention the cost of the gasket!

Simple answer... dont f--k the timing cover!!! $800 list price.

Be careful when removing some of those water pump bolts. They go through the timing cover (alloy) and into the engine block... mix of metals + coolant = tendency to sieze up pretty hard.

Get new bolts IMO and use plenty of antisieze... just in case it ever has to come off again.

I'd think about replacing the water pump... the input bearing tends to go at around the 10 year mark. Aftermarkets can be found for $120 and i noticed no change in cooling ability.

Dont forget to grab a new front seal if you're pulling the timing cover off. Just pry the old one out and tap the new one in with a big socket (there's a special tool for it as well).

wen it starts leaking could it be the gasket or is the cover stuffed once it leaks?? could ya explain this front seal a bit more for me please? i dont know much about the inner workings of engines, but im learning :D :D

the front seal 4.9 is talking about is the timing cover crank seal. This is a round lip seal. Once you get it out take it around to a local repco or motor parts place and they will match it with a new one. Very common seal ond easy to install. looks like a round motorcycle fork seal.
When taking off the timing cover, follow what everyone says above but undo more sump bolts it makes it alot easier, and also at the bottom of flat part of the cover there are locating dowels that can cause it to stick a little, ive found in the past that if you get a standly knife and cut excess gasket goo away from edges and also between the the cover and block helps. bit awkward to do but it makes it easy.
look on ebay for cover if need one $150 , or ring around the wrecking world

this is starting to be a bit of a pricey adventure. are the timing covers from older v8s the same as newer ones?? sorry bout all the questions guys but i dont like other people working on my car and i gotta learn somhow.

No the older timing covers are different.
The one from raceparts cost about $330.
Gasket is about $50 from Ford though.
Front seal is around $25 from Ford too.

i guess ill be getting on to them soon then. are the pullys hard to get on and off? and would repco be the go for the pully remover? im just trying to cover everything so i dont get stuck halfway through the job.

Where do you people get your ford prices from. I got a quote from ford for a timing cover cover gasket and it was $100 inc GST 2 weeks ago.
Repco was $15 and it had a water pump gasket and front seal in it also.
