I own a 96 EF XR8 and wanted to know the best way to get a deep throaty roar on a limited budget. Any ideas?

Forget the cam - extractors on an 8 isn't exactly 'budget', as it costs about $400 a side. A twin 2 1/2 inch exhaust cat back will still set you back a few hundred.....gotta give us a $$$ figure to work with

by the sounds of it you dont really have much money to play with. so i suggest you go down to good and cheap and get yourself a $10 drill and a 50c drill bit and drill some holes in the zorst just behind the muffler. thats probably the best youll get on your budget

An off the shelf 3" lukey super system gives a great sound and is nice and cheap. Without extractors and decent cats it won't give you a huge power increase but it will sound good.

All I did to mine was fit a straight though sports muffler and got rid of the rear muffler all together, $195. Then a pod filter made it sound a lot deeper, i'm not sure how much it was because it was a birthday present, around $120. It sounds much better then stock. Could still be louder.

the lukey 3" super system as mentioned for about $500 or $600 will give a nice deep note..

I dont want to spend thousands but I reckon around $500 -$1000. My knowledge is rather limited so any input would be great.

if you want to make it loud, then yeh exhaust stuff. easy.
if you want to make it growl, cam and/or extractors is the only way to go.

get 2.5 inch system, with glass packed mufflers, from what i've heard they sound good, and don't gut your cat, just go and grab a cat of an AU, or a VS-VZ V8 commodore, they have AC cats, best you can get, but AU falcon ones are very good, and easyier to find.
then later i'd get some extractors, or save up and do it in 1 hit.

Being an EF XR8, first thing, piss the back muffler to the funny little tip off all together. Replace it with a straight length of 2.5" pipe. Doing this alone will give you a bit of exhaust noise compared to none or sounding like an old ambulance going past.
Now heading toward the front of the car, replace the standard mufflers (as they are like a 2" diameter maze inside - absolutely noise killing) with some lukeys or some other non-restrictive slight offset or straight through type mufflers. Now those 2.5" lengths of pipes between the mufflers and the cats, they stay where they are as they are the only decent component of the standard exhaust system (this section is quiet good being a decent size, having a balance pipe and all). Going forward, replace the standard 2" cats (probably suitable for a Suzuki Swift) with some 2.5" high flow ones. And last bust not least replace the thickshake type straw headers with something decent. These will give you a bit more noise, but mainly a better quality of sound. Later on down the track throw a B or F type SVO cam in it to top things off Not only will it sound like an animal, it will go harder as well.
